<i><b>Deaf News: Canadian Deaf student told to stay home from mainstreaming school in afternoons due to a lack of interpreter, says mother.</b></i><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="http://deafyouvideo.blogspot.com/2016/05/deaf-student-told-to-stay-home-from.html" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Deaf student Kimberly Joy Anoee from Nunavut"><img height="261" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcM0AztXhERV5Smf9mtF4LpZ_gRcCmDkaoED_Wp3Fnt1WgYFAZ3ODMnM83ZjYsbWS9SJuSzPk8fogRkkdCiCKhS9EYlQUhFWpPCEKIQo7IIL8IGUUq_iqOR1T-gugYO1xXXCwCH-bOqg-Q/s320/kimberly-joy-anoee.jpg" width="300" /></a>CBC ARVIAT, NU -- A mother in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arviat" target="_blank">Arviat, Nunavut</a>, says her <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a> daughter has been told to stay home from school in the afternoons because of a lack of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language_interpretation#Sign_language" target="_blank">sign language interpreters</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />Rochelle Suluk's daughter Kimberly Joy Anoee is a Grade 9 student at <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_schools_in_Nunavut" target="_blank">John Arnalukjuak High School</a> in a community of about 2,700.<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/nunavut-children-hearing-loss-screening-1.3409415" target="_blank">Nunavut gets poor grade from audiologists for lack of child hearing programs</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />At the beginning of the school year, Suluk said she met with the principal of the school who informed her about her daughter's change in schedule.<br /><br /><br /><br />"The principal was saying that she only has to go to school only in the mornings because the ASL (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Sign_Language" target="_blank">American Sign Language</a>) interpreter is looking after other students," she said.<br /><br /><br /><br />School only has one full-time interpreter: The high school has one full-time American Sign Language (ASL) assistant. According to the superintendent, there are two Deaf students in the school.<br /><br /><br /><br />Suluk says a handful of other students hard of hearing also require the use of the ASL assistant and are able to attend a full day of class.<br /><br /><br /><br />Related: <a href="http://deafyouvideo.blogspot.com/2016/03/mainstream-school-lacks-communication.html">Mainstream School Lacks Communication Access</a><br /><br /><br /><br />"I really want my Deaf child who is 15 years of age to go to school too, just like any other normal student who goes to school everyday," Suluk said.<br /><br /><br /><br />Suluk said her daughter spends her afternoons at home with nothing to do. She has failed Grade 9 once and her mother is worried that by not going to school full-time, her education and social life is being compromised.<br /><br /><br /><br />Families usually consulted: department - Nunavut's department of education would not discuss the details of Suluk's daughter, citing confidentiality and privacy concerns, but said it provides "appropriate programming for children with <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_needs" target="_blank">special needs</a>."<br /><br /><br /><br />Cully Robinson, the superintendent for schools in the Kivalliq region, said staff positions are reviewed on an annual basis.<br /><br /><br /><br />"There's an ongoing gradual increase in school aged children with profound hearing impairments and ASL assistants assist with facilitating communication inside and outside the classroom," he said.<br /><br /><br /><br />Robinson said a student's schedule could be reduced for a variety of reasons, including social, physical or academic needs.<br /><br /><br /><br />"A change would not be implemented without family agreement, involvement of the school team, school administration and the involvement of the student support consultant," he said, adding the aim is to make sure every student is receiving the best education possible.<br /><br /><br /><br />Related: <a href="http://deafyouvideo.blogspot.com/2016/03/deaf-education-nonexistent-in-first.html">Deaf Education 'Nonexistent' In First Nations</a><br /><br /><br /><br />"The best way for parents to support their children is to work with the school and staff there who are very empathetic to the situation and want to help anyway that they can," he said.<br /><br /><br /><br />No help - Suluk said she has contacted the school's committee and district education authority officials to discuss why her daughter is not attending class in the afternoon.<br /><br /><br /><br />"I talked with them so many times," Suluk said. <br /><br /><br /><br />"I thought they would be helping me from the very start."<br /><br /><br /><br />She said it's heartbreaking when her daughter asks her why she can't go to school in the afternoon. <br /><br /><br /><br />When she grows up, she says Anoee hopes to become a sign language interpreter to help other students in Arviat. <br /><br /><br /><br />"If she ever graduates." <a href="http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/deaf-student-told-to-stay-home-from-school-in-afternoons-says-nunavut-mother-1.3581849" target="_blank">SOURCE</a>

What I couldn’t understand was the lack of understanding from his teachers at his previous school.<br /><br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://deafyouvideo.blogspot.com/2016/03/mainstream-school-lacks-communication.html" title="Related Story">Mainstream School Lacks Communication Access</a></span></div><br /><br />“They did not know how to treat him because of his <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_aid" target="_blank">hearing aids</a>.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Following abuse at the hands of other children, Chris was forced to carefully explain to James that he was happy with him just the way he his.<br /><br /><br /><br />“You find out who your friends are,” is the difficult advice he gave him.“Kids have to work things out for themselves,” he added.<br /><br /><br /><br />Since placing James in another school, he has flourished and is now an accomplished hockey player, much to his dad’s delight.<br /><br /><br /><br />Chris said: “Going to his new school totally transformed him as a person.<br /><br /><br /><br />“He was depressed and lacked self-belief and it was because of the common sense and logical understanding of the teachers at his new school that he began to build his confidence.”<br /><br /><br /><br />The now 14-year-old’s early life was beset by problems.<br /><br /><br /><br />James was born prematurely at 28 weeks in September<br /><br /><br /><br />2001 at The Queen Mother’s Hospital in Glasgow, weighing just 3lb.<br /><br /><br /><br />He was so tiny, Chris could hold him in the palm of his hand.<br /><br /><br /><br />After weeks of specialist care, he was eventually allowed to go home.<br /><br /><br /><br />However, Samantha rushed James to the former Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow 10 days later when he fell seriously ill with a respiratory virus.<br /><br /><br /><br />He was choking and having terrifying episodes where he would stop breathing.<br /><br /><br /><br />She took him to hospital but while in the waiting room he stopped breathing again.<br /><br /><br /><br />He was rushed to a side room where doctors resuscitated him. Medics said he could have died if he hadn’t got there when he did.<br /><br /><br /><br />Chris, 43, said: “My wife had this feeling and she turned round and James was going blue.<br /><br /><br /><br />“They rushed him into the hospital and he had gone. They got him back.<br /><br /><br /><br />“He was in a long time. They resuscitated him. He was a tiny baby. It was the most worrying thing that has ever happened.<br /><br /><br /><br />“Had we lived any further away we might not have got there in time. Another minute and he might not have been here. We were told that.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Doctors said James was suffering from RSV – a common virus with cold-like symptoms.<br /><br /><br /><br />Healthy children tend to shrug it off, but it can be life-threatening for premature babies.<br /><br /><br /><br />The star was in Spain at the time preparing for a crucial UEFA Cup tie with Valencia when Samantha called to say James was fighting for his life.<br /><br /><br /><br />He immediately tried to get a flight home, but couldn’t.<br /><br /><br /><br />In the end he chose not to go to the match but instead stayed at the hotel where Samantha could call to give him updates.<br /><br /><br /><br />He flew home early next day and went to the intensive care ward where he and Samantha kept a bedside vigil.<br /><br /><br /><br />The footballer said it was the most worrying time of his life.<br /><br /><br /><br />“James was on life support. The court found the institution and its principal guilty of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrimination" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">discrimination</a> but the defendants say they are considering an appeal.<br /><br /><br /><br />Back in 2014, privately-run Helsinki Design School turned away design student <a href="https://www.facebook.com/oskari.salomaa.9" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Oskari Salomaa</a>, citing insufficient resources to provide <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language_interpretation#Sign_language" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">interpreter</a> services. The institution had previously accepted Salomaa for the year-long program, but retracted the place when it learned of his <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_needs" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">special needs</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />On Monday, the Helsinki District Court ruled that the school had violated non-discrimination laws in refusing Salomaa the opportunity to study.<br /><br /><br /><br />The court imposed a fine of 1,280 euros on the school CEO and also called on the institution and its chief executive to compensate Salomaa to the tune of 8,000 euros. The defendants are also required to settle Salomaa’s legal expenses, which amounted to nearly 8,500 euros.<br /><br /><br /><br />Salomaa said that he was pleased with the outcome.<br /><br /><br /><br />"This means that sign language users have a right to be part of Finnish society.
