The First African Deaf University In Ghana

The University will be opened to all <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a> students in Africa.<br /><br /><br /><br />J. F. Labes, who communicates in the sign language, told <a href="http://starrfmonline.com/1.9153718" target="_blank">Starrfmonline.com</a> he bought into the idea after officials of <a href="https://www.fondation-sncf.org/en/" target="_blank">Mieux Vivre Foundation</a> mooted it to him since he had helped establish schools for the Deaf in France – his home country – and in Morocco.<br /><br /><br /><br />He was full of praise for the “exceptional” Vice Chancellor of Valley View University Prof. Robert Osei-Bonsu, who immediately offered a 50-acre space to construct the University for the Deaf. He stressed that the university is going to be autonomous, despite being on the campus of Valley View University.<br /><br /><br /><br />“I’m so impressed that we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU),” J. F. Labes, who is also the president of Unisda said. “We chose Ghana because it is a stable country and peaceful since it is the first in sub-Saharan Africa to attain independence.”<br /><br /><br /><br />He announced that Ghana will become the second in the world to host such facility after America’s <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallaudet_University" target="_blank">Gallaudet University</a> in Washington.<br /><br /><br /><br />A sponsors’ gathering is expected to be held in September in Ghana to appeal for funds for the ground-breaking initiative. Stakeholders including MPs, officials in the education sector and office of the president are scheduled to grace the occasion.<br /><br /><br /><br />“We want to make sure that everyone including the Deaf will have equal access to education. Persons with hearing impairments are more in Africa and in Ghana alone they make up 7% of the population. There is the need for education for those people hence our resolve to come up with the University,” he noted.<br /><br /><br /><br />He noted that all stakeholders including the schools of the Deaf in Ghana, national association of the Deaf have all been involved in the project.<br /><br /><br /><br />Accompanying J. The commission has just released a report identifying some of the barriers faced by the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a> community.<br /><br /><br /><br />Chief Commissioner David Arnot said people in the north suffer from a serious lack of access to services.<br /><br /><br /><br />"There are seven trained and certified interpreters in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saskatchewan" target="_blank">Saskatchewan</a>, as compared to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manitoba" target="_blank">Manitoba</a> that has 70," he said. "So I think that is clearly an area that needs to improve."<br /><br /><br /><br />The report also calls for universal screening of newborns and linking diagnosis with appropriate treatment.<br /><br /><br /><br />Arnot said the commission is helping the Deaf community to meet with policy makers to address these issues. In fact, the oldest permanent school for the Deaf in the United States the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_School_for_the_Deaf" target="_blank">American School for the Deaf</a> is right in West Hartford and has been operational since 1817. However, there are only just over 100 schools for the Deaf across the entire country, and only one fully Deaf college (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallaudet_University" target="_blank">Gallaudet University</a>), greatly limiting access.<br /><br /><br /><br />Across the country <a href="http://deafyouvideo.blogspot.com/search/label/Deaf%20Grassroots%20Movement">50 states held their own DGM rallies</a> on Wednesday.<br /><br /><br /><br />Note: Deaf with a capital "D" represents those with hearing loss who utilize sign language and are immersed in the Deaf community. But there’s been one major roadblock in her attempts to seek help: Hoffmeister is <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deafblindness" target="_blank">Deaf-Blind</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />“I’ve struggled and fought for weeks and weeks, and they said, ‘Well we can’t serve you, we can’t find <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language_interpretation#Sign_language" target="_blank">interpreters</a> for you, you won’t have communication access,’ and it’s been extremely frustrating,” Hoffmeister told the News Service through an interpreter. “It’s time to change, it has to be time to change. People want to come back from this, but they can’t. There’s nowhere for them to go because there’s no communication access.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Hoffmeister was among hundreds of people who gathered on <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Common" target="_blank">Boston Common</a> on Wednesday to raise awareness and increase political pressure to address the needs of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf, Deaf-Blind and Hard of Hearing</a> individuals. Wednesday’s event, sponsored by the <a href="http://www.tdgm2015.org/" target="_blank">Deaf Grassroots Movement</a> of Massachusetts, is part of a national effort to bring attention to issues in the Deaf community.<br /><br /><br /><br />The DGM aims to fight for the rights of the Deaf and future generations in the <a href="http://deafyouvideo.blogspot.com/search/label/Deaf%20Grassroots%20Movement">Deaf community in all 50 states</a>. On Wednesday all 50 state capitols will have a rally for Deaf Rights, including <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massachusetts" target="_blank">Boston, Massachusetts</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/SVL5o94L7Jo" width="500"></iframe></div><br /><br />Hoffmeister said she’s been working with Tabatha Patrican, a Deaf woman who has been in recovery for more than a year, to try to find a treatment facility that can meet her needs.<br /><br /><br /><br />“For three weeks we’ve gone through interviews, the paperwork process, what if she died tomorrow? The state would be responsible for her death if that were to happen,” Patrican said through an interpreter. “We need to have money provided for halfway houses, for trainers, for interpreters. They need to understand we’re at risk, we’re in danger, we need support, we need guidelines for this.”<br /><br /><br /><br />The <a href="http://www.mass.gov/eohhs/gov/departments/mcdhh/" target="_blank">Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (MCDHH)</a> said that it spends approximately $350,000 annually to ensure individuals have access to meetings, day treatment, and other services with <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Sign_Language" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">American Sign Language</a> interpreters or <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communication_access_real-time_translation" target="_blank">Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART)</a> support.<br /><br /><br /><br />“We have partnered with the Department of Public Health to bolster our efforts for opioid-related supports and will continue to work to make sure there is equal access … for every individual who is seeking treatment,” Aurora Wilber, spokesperson for MCDHH, said in a statement. “We are also pursuing initiatives in five key areas aimed at improving coordination of treatment, increasing technology to aid in communication, education and training programs in response to our population’s needs.”<br /><br /><br /><br />During fiscal 2015, MCDHH provided 6,389 hours of ASL interpreting and CART services in substance abuse settings in response to 3,427 service requests, the commission said. The commission is also implementing a program to train Deaf peer supports to use Narcan, an opioid overdose reversal drug.<br /><br /><br /><br />Patrican said detox centers have told her they don’t accept Deaf or Deaf-Blind patients and even walking into facilities asking for help has not worked. When an addict is ready to get help, Patrican said, it’s imperative that treatment starts quickly, before the addict could change their mind and continue to use.<br /><br /><br /><br />“<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_%28person%29" target="_blank">Hearing people</a> can walk in and immediately have services, but for Deaf people there is always a delay,” Patrican said. “I’ve lost two Deaf people from drugs. And they died because there was no treatment available to them.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Eveleen Cunningham, a licensed alcohol and substance abuse counselor who has been in recovery for more than 30 years, said there is a high rate of relapse among Deaf individuals in recovery because they don’t have complete access to the same kinds of treatment and support programs that hearing individuals have.<br /><br /><br /><br />Despite Beacon Hill’s laser-like focus on the opioid epidemic, Cunningham said the Deaf community has largely been forgotten because “there isn’t enough advocacy to increase services and there isn’t a focus on addressing Deaf services for people who are in recovery.”<br /><br /><br /><br />“Gov. (Charlie) Baker has funded a lot for opioid treatment and addiction recovery, but nothing specifically for Deaf individuals that would be available around the clock,” Cunningham said through an interpreter. “We need funding, we need treatment options that focus on the continuum of services for substance abuse, including 12-step programs adapted for Deaf individuals so they can understand and access it.”<br /><br /><br /><br />In the mid-1980s, Cunningham, who is Deaf, sought help for her own addiction. She said she had to fight to get into a treatment program and then had to teach the counselors there some rudimentary <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sign_language" target="_blank">sign language</a> so they could work with her. Why Some Parents Are Giving Their Kids Weed

<i><b>Medical Research: Parents of children with severe epilepsy are turning to medical marijuana in a desperate attempt to find relief and a life for their kids. Meanwhile, the medical community grapples with how to deal with the growing popularity of an unproven cure.</b></i><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="http://deafyouvideo.blogspot.com/2016/04/why-some-parents-are-giving-their-kids.html" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Kids on Weed - Illustration from Caitlin Doherty"><img height="373" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyCS3ytJEJYd2nU0NKwNAlEGP63ajENPvWlxQ1pY08LUKU_g6ZVuv7Pqd5BRrbYyFe0GJ8Mhr5d0jZbgcUUSfvxSL00ATO0A2tNcw4wA51zn5XXbVAOa8u8DjkjyVQJO0VP3zjo0TR9ehX/s320/cannabis-kids-parents.jpg" width="250" /></a>An article from <a href="http://www.todaysparent.com/kids/kids-health/why-some-parents-are-giving-their-kids-weed/" target="_blank">Today's Parent</a>: The day before Mandy McKnight gave her then six-year-old son Liam <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemp_oil" target="_blank">cannabis oil</a> for the first time, he had 70 serious tonic-clonic (formerly known as grand mal) <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epileptic_seizure" target="_blank">seizures</a>. A few times an hour, around the clock, he would lose consciousness while his whole body stiffened and convulsed for about three minutes. On top of the seizures and the exhaustion and disorientation that followed, Liam was knocked out by the side effects of the cocktail of anticonvulsant drugs he was taking several times a day. “Most of the time he would just lie on the couch drooling, basically catatonic,” says McKnight. “It was a nightmare.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Liam, now eight, has <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dravet_syndrome" target="_blank">Dravet syndrome</a>, a severe form of epilepsy caused by a rare genetic mutation. He was diagnosed when he started having seizures at nine months old. Before then, he had been a healthy, happy baby. Over the next five years, Liam was placed on 10 different medications and a special diet, but nothing worked: his seizures were becoming more intense and more frequent. Prolonged and repeated seizures (ones that last longer than five minutes and don’t allow for recovery between them) can be life-threatening, and by 2013, McKnight says she and her husband needed to act. “We felt like Liam was going to die if we didn’t do something.” They had heard success stories from other parents of kids with Dravet syndrome who were experimenting with cannabis oil-edible oil infused with strains of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_cannabis" target="_blank">medical marijuana</a> with high levels of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabidiol" target="_blank">cannabidiol</a> (CBD), a chemical that may reduce the frequency of seizures. They decided to give it a try. Liam’s paediatric neurologist was skeptical and refused to write a prescription for an unproven treatment, but they were hopeful, excited even. “We felt like it could be life changing for our family,” says McKnight, who has two older daughters. <br /><br /><br /><br />They were so anxious they travelled from their home in Ottawa to meet with a paediatrician in Edmonton, recommended by friends in their community, who was willing to write a prescription for medical marijuana. Reassured, the McKnights mail-ordered dried marijuana from their assigned licensed producer, and then worked with a Montreal-based medical marijuana dispensary to learn how to turn it into edible cannabis oil. In June 2014, after his inaugural dose of high-CBD cannabis oil, Liam had his first seizure-free day in two years-and then he went 10 more days without seizing. He started walking around, talking and feeding himself. “All of a sudden, he was looking us in the eye for the first time,” remembers McKnight. “I was finally really meeting my kid, who had been living in a fog of medication and seizures.”<br /><br /><br /><br />McKnight is part of a growing network of parents whose children have rare, difficult-to-treat forms of epilepsy who have exhausted traditional options and are turning to medical marijuana. These parents swap cannabis oil recipes on Facebook, share contacts for neurologists who are willing to write referrals to medical marijuana clinics and spend thousands of dollars a year on specialized plant strains (none of which are covered by drug plans).<br /><br /><br /><br />The idea of using CBD on kids went mainstream in 2013, after a documentary by Sanjay Gupta, a US neurosurgeon and medical reporter, featured the story of a six-year-old Colorado girl with Dravet syndrome who had experienced a dramatic decrease in seizures while on a daily CBD oil regimen. High-CBD cannabis oil is used commonly, and with great anecdotal success, for kids with severe epilepsy, but there are also reports of parents using it to treat their children’s autism, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attention_deficit_hyperactivity_disorder" target="_blank">ADHD</a> and anxiety. So far, most of what parents have to go on are reports from other families, though initial clinical studies of CBD are beginning to build evidence to support what parents using it already know. But with research very much in its infancy and no long-term studies or standardized product they can prescribe, most paediatric neurologists are reluctant to recommend cannabis for kids. In fact, the Canadian Paediatric Society recently released a statement saying that while research is ongoing, cannabis should only be considered as a possible treatment in “exceptional cases.” In the meantime, some desperate parents are forging ahead, accessing cannabis through Canada’s legal medical marijuana program and figuring out on their own how to dose their kids.<br /><br /><br /><br />Using marijuana to treat children can seem radical-as a recreational drug, it’s still illegal, and some research on heavy-pot-smoking teens suggests it can damage developing brains. Even for parents who now give it to their kids, the idea took some getting used to. “I was never a recreational user,” McKnight says. “If you had told me five years ago I’d be doing this, I would have said, ‘You’re crazy! I’m not giving my kid cannabis!’” Vancouver mom Sherri Brown has given CBD oil to her six-year-old son Quinn, who was diagnosed with epilepsy and autism. She’s become accustomed to fielding questions and criticisms from parents on social media. “Somebody jumped on me in an autism Facebook group and commented, ‘That’s irresponsible,’” Brown says. “The stigma around it being a dangerous illegal drug is going to persist for awhile.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Medical marijuana advocates are quick to explain that not all cannabis products are the same. Parents of kids with drug-resistant epilepsy choose CBD oil because it’s made from strains of the cannabis sativa plant that are bred to be both high in CBD and very low in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetrahydrocannabinol" target="_blank">tetrahydrocannabinol</a> (THC), the chemical responsible for the stereotypical “stoner” high. They would talk and I just didn't really get it."<br /><br /><br /><br />Making friends was more difficult than it is now.<br /><br /><br /><br />New beginning at Regina high school. We activists choose this day of rally to call for an end to discrimination in the workplace, removal of barriers in education, and implementation of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americans_with_Disabilities_Act_of_1990" target="_blank">Americans with Disabilities Act</a> laws in regards to on-site interpreting and captions in the media at public places. Our goal is to promote equality for all, with the quality of life improved for us. Bullied Deaf Boy Forced To Leave School

What I couldn’t understand was the lack of understanding from his teachers at his previous school.<br /><br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://deafyouvideo.blogspot.com/2016/03/mainstream-school-lacks-communication.html" title="Related Story">Mainstream School Lacks Communication Access</a></span></div><br /><br />“They did not know how to treat him because of his <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_aid" target="_blank">hearing aids</a>.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Following abuse at the hands of other children, Chris was forced to carefully explain to James that he was happy with him just the way he his.<br /><br /><br /><br />“You find out who your friends are,” is the difficult advice he gave him.“Kids have to work things out for themselves,” he added.<br /><br /><br /><br />Since placing James in another school, he has flourished and is now an accomplished hockey player, much to his dad’s delight.<br /><br /><br /><br />Chris said: “Going to his new school totally transformed him as a person.<br /><br /><br /><br />“He was depressed and lacked self-belief and it was because of the common sense and logical understanding of the teachers at his new school that he began to build his confidence.”<br /><br /><br /><br />The now 14-year-old’s early life was beset by problems.<br /><br /><br /><br />James was born prematurely at 28 weeks in September<br /><br /><br /><br />2001 at The Queen Mother’s Hospital in Glasgow, weighing just 3lb.<br /><br /><br /><br />He was so tiny, Chris could hold him in the palm of his hand.<br /><br /><br /><br />After weeks of specialist care, he was eventually allowed to go home.<br /><br /><br /><br />However, Samantha rushed James to the former Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow 10 days later when he fell seriously ill with a respiratory virus.<br /><br /><br /><br />He was choking and having terrifying episodes where he would stop breathing.<br /><br /><br /><br />She took him to hospital but while in the waiting room he stopped breathing again.<br /><br /><br /><br />He was rushed to a side room where doctors resuscitated him. Medics said he could have died if he hadn’t got there when he did.<br /><br /><br /><br />Chris, 43, said: “My wife had this feeling and she turned round and James was going blue.<br /><br /><br /><br />“They rushed him into the hospital and he had gone. They got him back.<br /><br /><br /><br />“He was in a long time. They resuscitated him. He was a tiny baby. It was the most worrying thing that has ever happened.<br /><br /><br /><br />“Had we lived any further away we might not have got there in time. Another minute and he might not have been here. We were told that.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Doctors said James was suffering from RSV – a common virus with cold-like symptoms.<br /><br /><br /><br />Healthy children tend to shrug it off, but it can be life-threatening for premature babies.<br /><br /><br /><br />The star was in Spain at the time preparing for a crucial UEFA Cup tie with Valencia when Samantha called to say James was fighting for his life.<br /><br /><br /><br />He immediately tried to get a flight home, but couldn’t.<br /><br /><br /><br />In the end he chose not to go to the match but instead stayed at the hotel where Samantha could call to give him updates.<br /><br /><br /><br />He flew home early next day and went to the intensive care ward where he and Samantha kept a bedside vigil.<br /><br /><br /><br />The footballer said it was the most worrying time of his life.<br /><br /><br /><br />“James was on life support. It's a service that the college pays for.<br /><br /><br /><br />While Schuster can read lips, Kern-Anderson makes it much easier for her to keep up with her peers.<br /><br /><br /><br />"It makes me feel like a normal person in the classroom," she said.<br /><br /><br /><br />Schuster is Brenda Knapp's first Deaf student and the experience has taught her to slow down and avoid tangents in her lectures that might be hard to translate.<br /><br /><br /><br />"You have to be very structured," Knapp said.<br /><br /><br /><br />While Schuster appreciates help from Kern-Anderson, she has been in the hearing world her whole life and she doesn't need an interpreter all the time.<br /><br /><br /><br />Her parents always pushed her to communicate in both <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language" target="_blank">English</a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Sign_Language" target="_blank">American Sign Language</a> after she lost her hearing at 14 months to spinal meningitis.<br /><br /><br /><br />She attended <a href="http://www.projecttalk.org/" target="_blank">Project Talk</a> in California, which specializes in helping Deaf children learn to talk, and speech therapy through the <a href="http://www.sjboces.org/" target="_blank">San Juan Board of Cooperative Educational Services</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />Growing up she also excelled in sports including tennis, cheer leading, volleyball and sharp-shooting. After high school, she attended two years college in California and majored in photography.<br /><br /><br /><br />"I never let anything stop me, although people do try," she said.<br /><br /><br /><br />Her long-term goal after she finishes classes in cosmetology and aesthetics is to open a salon and photography business.<br /><br /><br /><br />But before she can take her state test to get certified, she has to complete 1,800 hours in class.<br /><br /><br /><br />During all her time in school, she has noticed several ways the school can be more accessible and safe for Deaf students.<br /><br /><br /><br />For example, after the school held an assembly on school safety following a college shooting in Oregon, she suggested the school install TVs and more lights as part of the alarm system. These could help make Deaf students aware of an emergency.<br /><br /><br /><br />In addition, none of the other students are able to bring their phones into class. But Schuster can't be reached through a regular telephone during personal emergencies, so Knapp made an exception for her.<br /><br /><br /><br />But rather than being given special treatment, Schuster would be prefer the school have <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Videophone" target="_blank">video phones</a> available so she could communicate not only with her family, but with school administrators on different campuses.<br /><br /><br /><br />"I'm trying to improve the systems, not just for me but for everyone," she said.<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="http://www.starherald.com/news/regional_statewide/deaf-student-teaching-lessons-on-accessibility/article_370f5ee4-d57a-5aba-af53-80a617d4800b.html" target="_blank">SOURCE</a>

Save Ontario Schools, Deaf Community Says

We have many, many successful stories from the students and transfers from mainstream schools,” said Wiesblatt.<br /><br /><br /><br />Many fear community consultations are a sham and the province has already made up its mind about the closings.<br /><br /><br /><br />The total budget for the nine provincial and demonstration schools is $87.6 million. This includes salaries, operating costs and capital expenditures. Not some radical conservative group, but the <a href="http://ownitendit.org/" target="_blank">Gay & Lesbian Center of Los Angeles</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />In this day and age, when you would think that we have come so far in the struggle to get middle America to embrace the fact that this is not a disease with an orientation, this comes along and is making waves even in <a href="http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1713859/posts" target="_blank">conservative circles</a> and feeding the fodder.<br /><br /><br /><br />Response in the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT" target="_blank">LGBT</a> community has been strong, and according to many of the postings on the discussion board at the <a href="http://imaginatron.com/forum/" target="_blank">Own It. End It.</a> website, not everyone is happy with it.<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HIV" target="_blank">Human Immunodeficiency Virus</a> (HIV) is a Gay Disease? Are you kidding? For those of us living with the shame and fear of being HIV positive, I'm angry. For those who've lived long enough to see the world begin to accept HIV as more then a gay disease, I'm offended. For those who expect more from our gay organizations, I'm disappointed. Most people will only read your flashy tag line and that's what they'll promote. This world is filled with misinformation, due to our short attention spans. Most people get there information from bits and pieces propagated by the evening news or a flashy headline. I expected more from your center. While the details of your ad are most likely accurate, you've done an injustice to your community. End It." I frankly don't think that this distinction makes it OK. Own what? This has generated enough attention in L.A., at this point, that the casual observer know exactly what the billboards are asking gay men to do. Take ownership of a disease they didn't create. How can you ask us as a community to own something that has affected millions globally? And to a much greater degree worldwide the heterosexual populaion? It boggles the mind...<br /><br /><br /><br />Personally, I'm not comfortable with this at all. Gay men have fought this stigma from the very beginning of this disease. To have it come full circle in an shock tactic campaign, even in the interest of public awareness, is not cool. And before anyone says, "Look, it says clearly in the ad that they don't believe that it is a disease with an `orientation'" let me tell you something:<br /><br /><br /><br />I have taken enough marketing classes and seminars to understand that the initial impact of the bolded taglines is whatthe average driver on the streets of L.A. will remember, or the average reader skimming a magazine will read. Now in middle school, he’s spent almost his whole life with the ability to turn off the world’s noise at will. In the morning, he attaches the <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19924015" target="_blank">external magnets</a> of his cochlear implants to each side of his head, where they transmit sound from the <a href="http://www.mathworks.com/help/dsp/examples/cochlear-implant-speech-processor.html?requestedDomain=www.mathworks.com" target="_blank">microphones and speech processors</a> worn over his ears. The electrode arrays in each of his cochleae then stimulate the auditory nerve, and zap, he “hears.”<br /><br /><br /><br />With his implant, he’s become part of a new generation of profoundly <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a> kids who are assimilated into the mainstream <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_%28person%29" target="_blank">hearing</a> world. In 1989, the <a href="http://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/ProductsandMedicalProcedures/ImplantsandProsthetics/CochlearImplants/ucm062882.htm" target="_blank">Food and Drug Administration</a> approved cochlear implants for children aged 2 years or older; in 2000, the agency green-lit implants for kids as young as 12 months. In the wake of those approvals, thousands of parents like me with no connection to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaf_culture" target="_blank">Deaf culture</a> or knowledge of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Sign_Language" target="_blank">American Sign Language</a> have opted to have their children receive implants. (More than 90 percent of congenitally Deaf babies are born to typical-hearing parents.)<br /><br /><br /><br />But our decision also placed our son in between two worlds: He is not a member of Deaf <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sign_language" target="_blank">signing</a> culture, but neither is he fully part of the hearing community. Instead, he lives somewhere in the middle, joining the 48 million Americans who are challenged with some level of hearing loss.<br /><br /><br /><br />“Sometimes my brain accounts for the fact that I don’t hear,” he says. “Like if I stomp my foot with my implants off, then my brain kind of makes a sound for it.” He is coming to recognize himself as a “Hearing/Deaf” person an identity that has shaped his sense of social inclusion in unique ways. When his cochlear implants are off, he says, he experiences the world through a kind of “peaceful darkness.” (At times, the decision to turn it on and off is a strategic one: “It is kind of cool to take them off when someone is being annoying to me.”)<br /><br /><br /><br />According to the FDA, approximately 88,000 people in the U.S. had received cochlear implants as of 2012, including around 38,000 children. The majority of these children attend schools alongside typical-hearing peers, which can be mentally and emotionally taxing as they work to keep up with the sounds around them.<br /><br /><br /><br />Sometimes words just get all mixed up and you just can’t understand the person. “It’s not like you put the implants on and you can hear just like a normal person,” he reminds me. “Sometimes words just get all mixed up and you just can’t understand the person.” Indeed, experts in field of auditory-verbal therapy stress that implant-wearers must be “hearing athletes” in order to thrive in the cacophonous world. Listening is not a passive endeavor, and pressure to keep up can be tiring.<br /><br /><br /><br />In recent years, advancements in hearing technology have made it a little bit easier. My son now has the Naida CI Q90, a model from the California-based implant manufacturer <a data-omni-click="r'article',r'link',r'2',r'472542'" href="http://www.advancedbionics.com/">Advanced Bionics</a>. The implant, recently approved by the FDA, contains software that more effectively minimizes echo, wind, and reverberation sounds. It has Bluetooth capability, meaning that music, movies, and phone calls can be sent wirelessly into his device. It’s also capable of zooming in on a single voice in a noisy environment.<br /><br /><br /><br />The implant has gone a long way towards helping him integrate more seamlessly into the everyday hearing world. At school, for example, the teacher's voice is transmitted to our son’s receivers via an FM system above all other sound, and a portable <a data-omni-click="r'article',r'link',r'3',r'472542'" href="http://www.phonak.com/com/b2c/en/products/wireless-accessories/products/roger-pen/hearing-aid-accessory.html">pen-shaped microphone</a> on his school desk picks up small group conversations.<br /><br /><br /><br />But for a tween, naturally, the biggest concern it is all about fitting in. My son’s hair is now deliberately long enough to cover his hearing devices.
