She didn’t understand what they were about to do,” her mother Shirley Cohen told <a href="http://wreg.com/2016/06/30/disabled-st-jude-patient-sues-airport-and-tsa-after-bloody-scuffle-with-airport-police/" target="_blank">WREG</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />The lawsuit claims before Hannah had brain tumor surgery at St. Jude’s hospital, she already had “a physical and mental impairment that substantially limit one or more of her life activities.”<br /><br /><br /><br />“More particularly,” the lawsuit continues, “Hannah has damage from radiation and removal of a brain tumor that substantially limits her ability to speak, walk, stand, see, hear, care for herself, learn and work, think, concentrate, and interact with others.”<br /><br /><br /><br />“This substantial limitation is obvious upon sight and was obvious” on the day of the incident, the lawsuit filed in US District Court states.<br /><br /><br /><br />“She’s trying to get away from them,” Hannah’s mother described, “but in the next instant, one of them had her down on the ground and hit her head on the floor. And I looked and there’s blood everywhere.”<br /><br /><br /><br />All the while Shirley was kept from being able to help her daughter, causing her “extreme emotional injury as she watched the personnel assault her daughter,” according to court documents obtained by Infowars.<br /><br /><br /><br />The <a href="http://www.flymemphis.com/airport-police" target="_blank">Memphis International Airport Police Department</a> is also included as a defendant in the suit for “arresting her for no cause.”<br /><br /><br /><br />“Hannah was arrested, booked and on the night she should have been celebrating the end of her treatment, she was locked up in Jail East,” reports WREG.<br /><br /><br /><br />“Here we were with nowhere to go, not even a toothbrush, our bags had gone to Chattanooga,” Shirley said.<br /><br /><br /><br />TSA did not comment on the case, but referred travelers with special accommodations to call their TSA Cares hotline. What I couldn’t understand was the lack of understanding from his teachers at his previous school.<br /><br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://deafyouvideo.blogspot.com/2016/03/mainstream-school-lacks-communication.html" title="Related Story">Mainstream School Lacks Communication Access</a></span></div><br /><br />“They did not know how to treat him because of his <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_aid" target="_blank">hearing aids</a>.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Following abuse at the hands of other children, Chris was forced to carefully explain to James that he was happy with him just the way he his.<br /><br /><br /><br />“You find out who your friends are,” is the difficult advice he gave him.“Kids have to work things out for themselves,” he added.<br /><br /><br /><br />Since placing James in another school, he has flourished and is now an accomplished hockey player, much to his dad’s delight.<br /><br /><br /><br />Chris said: “Going to his new school totally transformed him as a person.<br /><br /><br /><br />“He was depressed and lacked self-belief and it was because of the common sense and logical understanding of the teachers at his new school that he began to build his confidence.”<br /><br /><br /><br />The now 14-year-old’s early life was beset by problems.<br /><br /><br /><br />James was born prematurely at 28 weeks in September<br /><br /><br /><br />2001 at The Queen Mother’s Hospital in Glasgow, weighing just 3lb.<br /><br /><br /><br />He was so tiny, Chris could hold him in the palm of his hand.<br /><br /><br /><br />After weeks of specialist care, he was eventually allowed to go home.<br /><br /><br /><br />However, Samantha rushed James to the former Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow 10 days later when he fell seriously ill with a respiratory virus.<br /><br /><br /><br />He was choking and having terrifying episodes where he would stop breathing.<br /><br /><br /><br />She took him to hospital but while in the waiting room he stopped breathing again.<br /><br /><br /><br />He was rushed to a side room where doctors resuscitated him. Medics said he could have died if he hadn’t got there when he did.<br /><br /><br /><br />Chris, 43, said: “My wife had this feeling and she turned round and James was going blue.<br /><br /><br /><br />“They rushed him into the hospital and he had gone. They got him back.<br /><br /><br /><br />“He was in a long time. They resuscitated him. He was a tiny baby. It was the most worrying thing that has ever happened.<br /><br /><br /><br />“Had we lived any further away we might not have got there in time. Another minute and he might not have been here. We were told that.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Doctors said James was suffering from RSV – a common virus with cold-like symptoms.<br /><br /><br /><br />Healthy children tend to shrug it off, but it can be life-threatening for premature babies.<br /><br /><br /><br />The star was in Spain at the time preparing for a crucial UEFA Cup tie with Valencia when Samantha called to say James was fighting for his life.<br /><br /><br /><br />He immediately tried to get a flight home, but couldn’t.<br /><br /><br /><br />In the end he chose not to go to the match but instead stayed at the hotel where Samantha could call to give him updates.<br /><br /><br /><br />He flew home early next day and went to the intensive care ward where he and Samantha kept a bedside vigil.<br /><br /><br /><br />The footballer said it was the most worrying time of his life.<br /><br /><br /><br />“James was on life support. The electrode arrays in each of his cochleae then stimulate the auditory nerve, and zap, he “hears.”<br /><br /><br /><br />With his implant, he’s become part of a new generation of profoundly <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a> kids who are assimilated into the mainstream <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_%28person%29" target="_blank">hearing</a> world. In 1989, the <a href="http://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/ProductsandMedicalProcedures/ImplantsandProsthetics/CochlearImplants/ucm062882.htm" target="_blank">Food and Drug Administration</a> approved cochlear implants for children aged 2 years or older; in 2000, the agency green-lit implants for kids as young as 12 months. In the wake of those approvals, thousands of parents like me with no connection to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaf_culture" target="_blank">Deaf culture</a> or knowledge of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Sign_Language" target="_blank">American Sign Language</a> have opted to have their children receive implants. (More than 90 percent of congenitally Deaf babies are born to typical-hearing parents.)<br /><br /><br /><br />But our decision also placed our son in between two worlds: He is not a member of Deaf <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sign_language" target="_blank">signing</a> culture, but neither is he fully part of the hearing community. Instead, he lives somewhere in the middle, joining the 48 million Americans who are challenged with some level of hearing loss.<br /><br /><br /><br />“Sometimes my brain accounts for the fact that I don’t hear,” he says. “Like if I stomp my foot with my implants off, then my brain kind of makes a sound for it.” He is coming to recognize himself as a “Hearing/Deaf” person an identity that has shaped his sense of social inclusion in unique ways. When his cochlear implants are off, he says, he experiences the world through a kind of “peaceful darkness.” (At times, the decision to turn it on and off is a strategic one: “It is kind of cool to take them off when someone is being annoying to me.”)<br /><br /><br /><br />According to the FDA, approximately 88,000 people in the U.S. had received cochlear implants as of 2012, including around 38,000 children. The majority of these children attend schools alongside typical-hearing peers, which can be mentally and emotionally taxing as they work to keep up with the sounds around them.<br /><br /><br /><br />Sometimes words just get all mixed up and you just can’t understand the person. “It’s not like you put the implants on and you can hear just like a normal person,” he reminds me. “Sometimes words just get all mixed up and you just can’t understand the person.” Indeed, experts in field of auditory-verbal therapy stress that implant-wearers must be “hearing athletes” in order to thrive in the cacophonous world. At school, for example, the teacher's voice is transmitted to our son’s receivers via an FM system above all other sound, and a portable <a data-omni-click="r'article',r'link',r'3',r'472542'" href="http://www.phonak.com/com/b2c/en/products/wireless-accessories/products/roger-pen/hearing-aid-accessory.html">pen-shaped microphone</a> on his school desk picks up small group conversations.<br /><br /><br /><br />But for a tween, naturally, the biggest concern it is all about fitting in. My son’s hair is now deliberately long enough to cover his hearing devices. He later moved to Staten Island to follow up on his discovery. In 1860 which was 16 years before Bell claimed to have invented the telephone Meucci demonstrated his teletrofono in New York, but could not afford the $250 required to register a patent.<br /><br /><br /><br />Bell, who took an interest in Meucci’s invention, convinced him to share his research material. They shared a lab together and Bell had full access to Meucci’s materials. Bell made good and clever use of Meucci before coming up with his own “invention” and applying for a patent in his own name. Meucci duly protested, but lacking connections, was unable to convince anyone that Alexander Graham Bell had stolen his ideas. Under general patent laws, then and today, Bell should have credited Meucci and agreed to share royalties with him.<br /><br /><br /><br />Beset with debt, Meucci could not afford the $10 fee for maintaining the patent caveat and temporarily gave up pursuit of Bell in 1874. Two years later, Bell, uncontested by Meucci, was granted ownership of the patent. Interestingly, another contender, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elisha_Gray" target="_blank">Elisha Gray</a>, had also submitted a patent for the telephone some hours before Bell, but due to a technicality, Bell was the registrant whose application won.<br /><br /><br /><br />Meucci finally decided to sue Bell, charging him with fraud in the Supreme Court. The case looked rather promising for Meucci, but unfortunately, before any proceedings could begin, Meucci died on October 18, 1889.<br /><br /><br /><br />In 2001, the United States Congress took the extraordinary decision of doing justice to Meucci, passing a resolution officially according recognition to Meucci as the real inventor of the telephone, stating that “if Meucci had been able to pay the caveat after 1874, no patent could have been issued to Bell.” The US Congress further stated that given all the facts of the patent disputes between Gray and Bell, under no terms should Alexander Graham Bell have been awarded the patent for the telephone by the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Patent_and_Trademark_Office" target="_blank">United States Patent and Trademark Office</a> in 1876. Alexander Graham Bell was posthumously stripped of his dubious honor as the inventor of the telephone.<br /><br /><br /><br />“Justice” was finally served - well, sort of.<br /><br /><br /><br />In effect, the Congressional resolution served only as a declaration and did not technically annul or modify the patent which Bell received in 1876. The resolution was also subsequently followed by another legislative declaration upholding Bell’s priority and his status as the inventor (patent holder) of the telephone.<br /><br /><br /><br />Credit where credit is due:<br /><br /><br /><br />Both Antonio Meucci and Elisha Gray should be credited with successfully inventing telephones in the United States before Alexander Graham Bell did so in 1876. Others who performed pioneering experimental work with electrical voice transmissions over wires included <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Edison" target="_blank">Thomas Edison</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Innocenzo_Manzetti" target="_blank">Innocenzo Manzetti</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Bourseul" target="_blank">Charles Bourseul</a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Philipp_Reis" target="_blank">Johann Philipp Reis</a>. This is the second self-portrait in his <a href="http://www.straight.com/news/575436/vancouver-advocate-illuminates-challenges-deaf-people-face-social-media-self-portrait">series</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />Are we programmed to behave robotically in social environments?<br /><br /><br /><br />The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cochlear_implant" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">cochlear implant (or CI)</a> received its approval by the <a href="http://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/ProductsandMedicalProcedures/ImplantsandProsthetics/CochlearImplants/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1990</a> and it has been controversial for over two decades. This machine had a significant impact on <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaf_culture" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Deaf culture</a> due to the perception of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_%28person%29" target="_blank">hearing</a> people trying to force it on the community. The greater the force, the more some Deaf community members want to flip a table. For them, the CI is nothing but a computer inside a human body.<br /><br /><br /><br />In this image, this person is the embodiment of a betrayal of the Deaf world, though Deaf culture remains a part of him.<br /><br /><br /><br />His experience of Deafness is like a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porcupine" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">porcupine</a>: when there are social dangers, a quill pricks him for every awkward encounter.<br /><br /><br /><br />Every day, he is reminded of his interaction with <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audism" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Audisms</a> and ensures that they’re comfortable with him, even though a large percentage of the hearing world will avoid Deaf people due to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communication#Barriers_to_effective_human_communication" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">communication barriers</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />He is often caught “checking out” of a conversation and, like a machine, nodding with a pseudo smile.<br /><br /><br /><br />This bionic human experiences stigma and judgment from both Deaf people and the hearing world because he belongs to neither.<br /><br /><br /><br />Though his Deaf identity is invisible, he has a choice: to hide or to reveal his beautiful self.<br /><br /><br /><br />The <a href="http://deafyouvideo.blogspot.com/2015/11/artificial-intelligence-may-kill-us-all.html">CI may be a machine</a> and technology will never be perfect. The gap between both worlds the Deaf and hearing worlds are great.
