She didn’t understand what they were about to do,” her mother Shirley Cohen told <a href="http://wreg.com/2016/06/30/disabled-st-jude-patient-sues-airport-and-tsa-after-bloody-scuffle-with-airport-police/" target="_blank">WREG</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />The lawsuit claims before Hannah had brain tumor surgery at St. Jude’s hospital, she already had “a physical and mental impairment that substantially limit one or more of her life activities.”<br /><br /><br /><br />“More particularly,” the lawsuit continues, “Hannah has damage from radiation and removal of a brain tumor that substantially limits her ability to speak, walk, stand, see, hear, care for herself, learn and work, think, concentrate, and interact with others.”<br /><br /><br /><br />“This substantial limitation is obvious upon sight and was obvious” on the day of the incident, the lawsuit filed in US District Court states.<br /><br /><br /><br />“She’s trying to get away from them,” Hannah’s mother described, “but in the next instant, one of them had her down on the ground and hit her head on the floor. And I looked and there’s blood everywhere.”<br /><br /><br /><br />All the while Shirley was kept from being able to help her daughter, causing her “extreme emotional injury as she watched the personnel assault her daughter,” according to court documents obtained by Infowars.<br /><br /><br /><br />The <a href="http://www.flymemphis.com/airport-police" target="_blank">Memphis International Airport Police Department</a> is also included as a defendant in the suit for “arresting her for no cause.”<br /><br /><br /><br />“Hannah was arrested, booked and on the night she should have been celebrating the end of her treatment, she was locked up in Jail East,” reports WREG.<br /><br /><br /><br />“Here we were with nowhere to go, not even a toothbrush, our bags had gone to Chattanooga,” Shirley said.<br /><br /><br /><br />TSA did not comment on the case, but referred travelers with special accommodations to call their TSA Cares hotline. That's why some communities have started allowing people to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Next_Generation_9-1-1" target="_blank">text 911</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />Residents in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakland_County,_Michigan" target="_blank">Oakland County</a> are allowed to text 911 and a message will appear on a screen for a dispatcher to read. A <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a> Rochester Hills man said the texting system saved his house from burning down.<br /><br /><br /><br />The fire started when the man's mother, Mary Powers, tried to clean the oven.<br /><br /><br /><br />"I smelled something and I came out here and the oven was on fire," Powers said.<br /><br /><br /><br />She ran back in the room to tell her son, Scott Powers, to get help.<br /><br /><br /><br />"I told him to call 911," she said.<br /><br /><br /><br />Her son pulled out his cellphone but didn't dial.<br /><br /><br /><br />"That means text because he's Deaf," Powers said.<br /><br /><br /><br />"I'm Deaf, I can't talk on the phone, need fire department immediately," the text read.<br /><br /><br /><br />The text went right through to operators at the <a href="https://www.oakgov.com/sheriff/Pages/about/div_emergency_dispatch.aspx" target="_blank">Oakland County Dispatch Center</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />Oakland County has been equipped with the 911 text messaging for just over a year. They average around 12 emergency text messages a day. Scott Powers owns his house and is thankful the county can accommodate his needs.<br /><br /><br /><br />"I like to be independent without depending on other people," he said. "I used to think, 'What would I do if my house was on fire?' The first thing I used to think was, 'Run to my neighbor.'"<br /><br /><br /><br />He's fortunate to live in an area where he can get emergency help. He hopes other communities will get on board with the technology.<br /><br /><br /><br />"When I'm on the road visiting a friend, sometimes it doesn't work," Powers said. "I'll text 911. I'd get a response back saying it's not available."<br /><br /><br /><br />This was the first time the Rochester Hills Fire Department benefited from the 911 text. He said that they took him to a restaurant and ordered food which cost him a few hundred dollars. The cheque the couple issued however, eventually bounced.<br /><br /><br /><br />Several others who commented on Dave’s comment suggested that the woman and her husband would do anything to score a free meal.<br /><br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" src="http://www.liveleak.com/ll_embed?f=86200dfb10ad" width="500"></iframe></div><br /><br /><a href="https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=1020917287945934&id=116960455008293&substory_index=0" target="_blank">Another Facebook user who identified himself as a property agent</a> described the couple as ‘phony buyers”. He asked fellow agents to beware of the couple saying they bought from “PropNex and Huttons agents ranging from 2-4 units as bulk purchases,” but that all their cheques from various banks bounced.<br /><br /><br /><br />He identified the couple as Alice and Chong Meng Chew. This Facebook user also released their personal details like address and phone numbers. He advised other agents to demand only Cashier’s Order from the couple if they ever come forward to buy any realty in the future.<br /><br /><br /><br />“I apologise for the behaviour but I was having a bad cold that day, and I didn’t know that the cleaner was deaf and mute,” Fong told Chinese newspaper Shin Min today (5 Jun). In the video shared by Euphemia Lee of the incident however, Fong was heard implying, “he is old, he is Deaf and he is dumb, so? I must give in to him? I don’t understand!”<br /><br /><br /><br />Fong told the Chinese newspaper earlier today that she had taken half-day off from work on that day as she was feeling unwell. She had also noticed “something dirty” in the food she had finished eating, and wanted to take a picture of it to complain. "If I failed in the first week that means millions of people would view <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a> people as people that can't dance."<br /><br /><br /><br />But the Deaf model and actor decided to take on the challenge.<br /><br /><br /><br />During a rehearsal, professional dance partner <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peta_Murgatroyd" target="_blank">Peta Murgatroyd</a> cranked the music up so DiMarco could feel the vibrations.<br /><br /><br /><br />"When we danced, it really just threw me off," he says. "I told Peta I've always been Deaf. I'm not used to sound, so I think it's better if we dance without the sound. And after that we did better."<br /><br /><br /><br />Not only did they do better, they won the competition on May 24.<br /><br /><br /><br />"We ended on a good note," he says with a smile.<br /><br /><br /><br />DiMarco was born in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queens" target="_blank">Queens, New York</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />"We have over 25 Deaf individuals in my family," he explains. "It is genetic, but there's only 10% of Deaf people that actually come from Deaf families."<br /><br /><br /><br />His twin brother Nico and older brother Neal are Deaf, as are his parents, grandparents and great-grandparents.<br /><br /><br /><br />"I really consider myself fortunate having that communication access," the 27-year-old says. "My whole family knows <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Sign_Language" target="_blank">American Sign Language</a>."<br /><br /><br /><br />Because of that, growing up Deaf wasn't an issue. He credits his mom Donna for helping him integrate into the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_%28person%29" target="_blank">hearing</a> world.<br /><br /><br /><br />"My mom did a great job because ever since I was born she would put me into any type of sporting activity with hearing teams," he says. "My mom would often send me out to play with the neighbors, so I felt like I had the best of both worlds."<br /><br /><br /><br />DiMarco went on to graduate with a degree in mathematics from <a href="http://www.gallaudet.edu/" target="_blank">Gallaudet University</a>, a private university for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Washington, D.C.<br /><br /><br /><br />"In middle school, I had the best math teacher I've ever had, and he was Deaf...and I felt inspired by him," he recalls. "I knew from then on that I wanted to be a math teacher."<br /><br /><br /><br />But his life took a different turn when Hollywood came calling.<br /><br /><br /><br />The producers of the TV drama ‘<i><a href="http://abcfamily.go.com/shows/switched-at-birth" target="_blank">Switched at Birth</a></i>’ approached him on social media to play a Deaf character on the show.<br /><br /><br /><br />Then "<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America%27s_Next_Top_Model" target="_blank">America's Next Top Model</a>" producers invited him to audition for season 22, after discovering him on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/nyledimarco/?hl=en" target="_blank">Instagram</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />But being on the modeling reality show wasn't easy.<br /><br /><br /><br />"I had to live with the models in one big house for two months, 24 hours a day. Only a few of them actually learned how to sign ... I couldn't really communicate with anybody and I felt isolated," he remembers. "I just remained optimistic and I was like, 'I'm gonna win this show.'"<br /><br />And he did.<br /><br /><br /><br />"I'm very visual and through those visual cues, I was able to absorb it really fast," he says.<br /><br />The win led DiMarco to a modeling contract.<br /><br /><br /><br />"All within one year, my life just completely flipped for the better."<br /><br /><br /><br />Now he wants to put his celebrity to good use. He recently founded the <a href="https://nyledimarcofoundation.com/" target="_blank">Nyle DiMarco Foundation</a> to help people in the Deaf community gain access to American Sign Language.<br /><br /><br /><br />"There's 70 million Deaf people in this world and only 2% of them have access to education in sign language," he says. "We're talking about millions of Deaf kids without language, without education."<br /><br />DiMarco wants to change that.<br /><br /><br /><br />"What people don't realize is we have our own beautiful culture. <i><b>Deaf News: Deaf ex-employee’s court case puts bosses on notice for behaving badly in Mississauga, Canada.</b></i><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="http://deafyouvideo.blogspot.com/2016/07/firing-of-deaf-employee-costs-firm-240k.html" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Vicky Strudwick"><img height="260" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBDLNBwNZExr_cgJNTqD50iiySZTMDfAYjOnKqUhDOQBtbtc-YdP-hEUblAah_8GANq3_M5M_IY7XZ9_lVaPoQ5UYIF3pcq9Td24c230Ko_6CQpa8qERQ0623CRRZ8cq9jvA_9Lq5_VRUK/s1600/vicky-strudwick.jpg" width="250" /></a>TORONTO, ON -- The Canadian Press: A long-time employee tormented by her employer and unceremoniously dumped after she went <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a> had her damages award more than doubled to $246,000 by Ontario’s top court on Thursday.<br /><br /><br /><br />In its decision, the Appeal Court ruled the egregious nature of the company’s “heartless” misconduct warranted significantly higher damages for Vicky Strudwick.<br /><br /><br /><br />“In the lead-up to Ms. Strudwick’s termination, she was belittled, isolated, humiliated and made to suffer the effects of her disability to the greatest extent possible,” the Appeal Court said.<br /><br /><br /><br />“This conduct was deliberate, malicious and designed to force Ms. Strudwick to quit a job she had held for almost 16 years.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Court documents show that Strudwick worked for <a href="https://www.acceintl.com/" target="_blank">Applied Consumer and Clinical Evaluations</a>, a family-run business based in Mississauga, Ont., that recruits people to participate in focus groups. She began by doing data entry, but later instructed recruiting staff, earning $12.85 an hour.<br /><br /><br /><br />In October 2010, she went completely Deaf - possibly because of a virus.<br /><br /><br /><br />Court records show that Andrew Hoffman, the general manager, and a supervisor, Liz Camilleri, then began a concerted campaign of abuse against Strudwick aimed at forcing her to quit.<br /><br /><br /><br />They not only denied her any accommodation for her disability, but actually took steps to make her life even more difficult, the court said.<br /><br /><br /><br />In May 2011, Hoffman fired her, allegedly for pulling a “stunt” at a company event, prompting Strudwick, then 56, to sue for wrongful dismissal and abuse.<br /><br /><br /><br />Applied Consumer never delivered a statement of defence and was noted in default.<br /><br /><br /><br />In August last year, <a href="http://www.scc-csc.ca/case-dossier/info/counsel-procureurs-eng.aspx?cas=36122" target="_blank">Superior Court Justice Grant Dow awarded her a total of $113,782 and $40,000 in legal costs</a>. Strudwick appealed the damages award as too low, while Applied Consumer - which has about 80 employees - argued the legal costs award was too high.<br /><br /><br /><br />The Appeal Court affirmed the costs award, but found Strudwick deserved much more by way of damages given the “cruel” treatment to which her bosses had subjected her.<br /><br /><br /><br />Examples included giving her instructions while preventing her from lip reading, then calling her stupid. They refused to let her turn her desk around so that she could see people as they approached.<br /><br /><br /><br />“In the immediate lead-up to her dismissal, Ms. Strudwick was confronted in front of an estimated 13 other employees, yelled at and called a ‘goddamned fool’,” the Appeal Court stated.<br /><br /><br /><br />Hoffman, who would later himself be fired, gave her a termination letter and a cheque for three months’ pay. When she refused to sign a release, he took the cheque back and had her marched out of the building in front of her co-workers.<br /><br /><br /><br />Applied Consumer, which claims to foster an environment of “empowerment, engagement, fairness and responsibility,” then claimed she had been fired for insubordination and wilful misconduct - a tactic that delayed her access to employment insurance.<br /><br /><br /><br />On appeal, Strudwick argued for more than $1 million, but the court said its hands were tied by her initial statement of claim, which sought $240,000 plus an amount for loss of benefits.<br /><br /><br /><br />The Appeal Court said she deserved her full claim for damages in light of the “malicious and heartless” treatment meted out to her. The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) recognizes the extraordinary achievements of DGM in setting up rallies in the capitals of nearly all 50 states, each with many deaf people attending and showing the strength of the deaf community! The NAD congratulates, applauds, and thanks DGM for tremendously raising awareness of Deaf Culture, deaf people, ASL, and all the rights and needs of ours that are not being met now. DGM has powerfully raised this awareness on the state level, and the NAD expresses its deep appreciation for DGM’s work.<br /><br /><br /><br />I remember in September 2015 when DGM hosted a national rally in the Nation’s Capitol in Washington, DC. The NAD observed the online discussion of DGM’s national rally, which was new and interesting. The NAD respected the independence and autonomy of DGM. When DGM invited me to present on behalf of the NAD, we gladly accepted this honor to join and support the national DGM rally. It was wonderful to see deaf people from all over the country come together for the national DGM rally, which included great testimony from various people on the challenges and barriers that deaf people continue to face every day in this country.<br /><br /><br /><br />DGM successfully did it again in nearly all 50 states! The University will be opened to all <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a> students in Africa.<br /><br /><br /><br />J. F. Labes, who communicates in the sign language, told <a href="http://starrfmonline.com/1.9153718" target="_blank">Starrfmonline.com</a> he bought into the idea after officials of <a href="https://www.fondation-sncf.org/en/" target="_blank">Mieux Vivre Foundation</a> mooted it to him since he had helped establish schools for the Deaf in France – his home country – and in Morocco.<br /><br /><br /><br />He was full of praise for the “exceptional” Vice Chancellor of Valley View University Prof. Robert Osei-Bonsu, who immediately offered a 50-acre space to construct the University for the Deaf. He stressed that the university is going to be autonomous, despite being on the campus of Valley View University.<br /><br /><br /><br />“I’m so impressed that we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU),” J. F. Labes, who is also the president of Unisda said. “We chose Ghana because it is a stable country and peaceful since it is the first in sub-Saharan Africa to attain independence.”<br /><br /><br /><br />He announced that Ghana will become the second in the world to host such facility after America’s <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallaudet_University" target="_blank">Gallaudet University</a> in Washington.<br /><br /><br /><br />A sponsors’ gathering is expected to be held in September in Ghana to appeal for funds for the ground-breaking initiative. Stakeholders including MPs, officials in the education sector and office of the president are scheduled to grace the occasion.<br /><br /><br /><br />“We want to make sure that everyone including the Deaf will have equal access to education. Persons with hearing impairments are more in Africa and in Ghana alone they make up 7% of the population. There is the need for education for those people hence our resolve to come up with the University,” he noted.<br /><br /><br /><br />He noted that all stakeholders including the schools of the Deaf in Ghana, national association of the Deaf have all been involved in the project.<br /><br /><br /><br />Accompanying J. "So I think that is clearly an area that needs to improve."<br /><br /><br /><br />The report also calls for universal screening of newborns and linking diagnosis with appropriate treatment.<br /><br /><br /><br />Arnot said the commission is helping the Deaf community to meet with policy makers to address these issues. Now they're figuring out how to refine their gadget for social good...and make sure they pass their college exams.<br /><br /><br /><br />The <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/SignAloud" target="_blank">SignAloud</a> glove captures ASL gestures with sensors that measure everything from XYZ coordinates to the way individual fingers flex or bend. That sensor data is sent via Bluetooth to a nearby computer and fed into coding algorithms that categorize the gestures, which are translated into English and then audibly spoken via speaker. <i><b>Deaf News: A Deaf Scottish businessman jailed for defrauding taxpayers.</b></i><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="http://deafyouvideo.blogspot.com/2016/05/deaf-scottish-businessman-jailed-for.html" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Deaf Scottish businessman Andrew Thomson jailed for defrauding taxpayers"><img height="305" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7QzT_tp6Sr68GkXcJrNOzJqOfeN_BAz1ppOTE0liWtuKabTjWl3C7QMX8ndKW5Et6V3NSBLYN4Ge6dH0-GMioI9Oe-2qPZzXjr6EiGKuY1u8XNCMfXo9iiz1G9T7M_h-5KGrs6xqd8WEt/s320/deaf-scottish-man-andrew-thomson.jpg" width="300" /></a>FALKIRK, UK -- Falkirk Herald‎: An award-winning <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a> businessman was jailed for 20 months after admitting he used his business to defraud £80,000 from taxpayers.<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://www.facebook.com/andrew.thomson.334" target="_blank">Andrew Thomson</a>, who was born profoundly Deaf, was described as a “highly-culpable” fraudster by Sheriff William Gilchrist at Stirling Sheriff Court yesterday for using his company to fraudulently claim the cash.<br /><br /><br /><br />The 51-year-old admitted using Sign-now to milk a government scheme intended to help the disabled into employment and channel tens of thousands of pounds through another company for the Deaf, run by his Deaf wife, into his own pocket.<br /><br /><br /><br />He pleaded guilty to defrauding the so-called Access to Work Scheme between January and November 2011, before an anonymous tip-off alerted the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Department_for_Work_and_Pensions" target="_blank">Department of Work and Pensions (DWP)</a>, who investigated the claim.<br /><br /><br /><br />Defence advocate David Nicolson said it had got into financial difficulty when software designed by Thomson was mimicked by others and his clients no longer needed his services.<br /><br /><br /><br />He said since the fraud came to light Thomson had been ostracised, isolated and shunned in the Deaf world. Sign-now closed in 2012 and The Interpreting Agency went the same way.<br /><br /><br /><br />The court heard Thomson claimed he needed six hours a day of interpreting assistance and two hours a day translation to assist him with correspondence and making and taking phone calls.<br /><br /><br /><br />Freelance <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Sign_Language" target="_blank">British Sign Language</a> interpreters, charged out at £44 an hour, were employed under the Access To Work Scheme through the Interpreting Agency Ltd, run by Thomson’s wife, Caroline Thomson (52).<br /><br /><br /><br />The Interpreting Agency Ltd submitted invoices in support of Thomson’s claims which were paid by DWP into a bank account in the name of The Interpreting Agency Ltd. The court heard that Thomson himself was a signatory of this bank account.<br /><br /><br /><br />Sarah Lumsden, the depute fiscal, said there weren’t enough British Sign Language interpreters “physically available” to cover the number of hours claimed. His wife’s plea of not guilty to involvement was accepted.<br /><br /><br /><br />Mr Thomson won the Stelios Award for <a href="http://www.disabledentrepreneurs.co.uk/team_member/andrew-thomson/" target="_blank">Disabled Entrepreneurs</a> – the UK’s top accolade for disabled people - in 2008 for his work in establishing <a href="https://sign-now.com/" target="_blank">Sign-now.com</a>, providing video conferencing for the Deaf.<br /><br /><br /><br />Thomson’s company, whose clients had included the NHS, a charity for the deaf and Falkirk Council, was described as “a web-based means of enabling Deaf people to communicate with the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_%28person%29" target="_blank">hearing</a> world”.<br /><br /><br /><br />He received his 2008 award from easyJet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannau who said that Thomson had demonstrated “drive, creativity and determination”.<br /><br /><br /><br />During the DWP investigation the Thomsons’ home in New Carron, Falkirk, Sign-now’s offices in Grangemouth and the Interpreting Agency’s offices in Blythswood Square, Glasgow, were searched.<br /><br /><br /><br />Diaries and invoices were seized and the freelance British Sign Language interpreters used by the Interpreting Agency Ltd were questioned.<br /><br /><br /><br />The couple had originally been charged with a four-year scam to defraud taxpayers of nearly £250,000 by submitting bogus claims stretching back to 2008 – the year Thomson collected the Stelios Award.<br /><br /><br /><br />Jailing Thomson for 20 months, Sheriff Gilchrist referred to judges’ guidelines for dealing with welfare scams, though he said the Access to Work Scheme was actually a grant.<br /><br /><br /><br />Addressing Thomson though a sign language interpreter, he said: “If I had been applying the guidelines for benefit fraud, I would have assessed culpability here as being medium, on the basis that the claim was not fraudulent from the start, although there were elements of high culpability, in that there was an abuse of trust and responsibility and the fraud required planning and was not unsophisticated.<br /><br /><br /><br />“The amount defrauded was substantial – £80,000 – and this amount was defrauded in the context of the accused and his company already receiving generous financial support from the taxpayer.<br /><br /><br /><br />“In the circumstances I am satisfied that a custodial sentence is the only appropriate sentence.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Thomson’s Deaf wife, who like him uses signing rather than oral language, let out a guttural scream when the sentence was announced and shook her fist at the sheriff<br /><br /><br /><br />One of the couple’s two sons, who are not Deaf, banged the seats and wall of the court and shouted obscenities before being ushered out by a police officer.<br /><br /><br /><br />Thomson was then led to the cells in handcuffs.<br /><br /><br /><br />A confiscation hearing under the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proceeds_of_Crime_Act_2002" target="_blank">Proceeds of Crime Act</a> has been set for June 22.<br /><br /><br /><br />When collecting his £50,000 Stelios Award, Thomson said Sign-now.com was “all about gaining the confidence of our clients and the trust and support of the interpreters we employ”.<br /><br /><br /><br />The awards are a partnership between Sir Stelios’s Philanthropic Foundation and the Leonard Cheshire disability charity. <a href="http://www.falkirkherald.co.uk/news/crime/deaf-businessman-jailed-for-defrauding-taxpayers-1-4125344" target="_blank">SOURCE</a>.
