Nyle DiMarco Wants To Empower Others Who Are Deaf

"If I failed in the first week that means millions of people would view <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a> people as people that can't dance."<br /><br /><br /><br />But the Deaf model and actor decided to take on the challenge.<br /><br /><br /><br />During a rehearsal, professional dance partner <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peta_Murgatroyd" target="_blank">Peta Murgatroyd</a> cranked the music up so DiMarco could feel the vibrations.<br /><br /><br /><br />"When we danced, it really just threw me off," he says. "I told Peta I've always been Deaf. I'm not used to sound, so I think it's better if we dance without the sound. And after that we did better."<br /><br /><br /><br />Not only did they do better, they won the competition on May 24.<br /><br /><br /><br />"We ended on a good note," he says with a smile.<br /><br /><br /><br />DiMarco was born in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queens" target="_blank">Queens, New York</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />"We have over 25 Deaf individuals in my family," he explains. "It is genetic, but there's only 10% of Deaf people that actually come from Deaf families."<br /><br /><br /><br />His twin brother Nico and older brother Neal are Deaf, as are his parents, grandparents and great-grandparents.<br /><br /><br /><br />"I really consider myself fortunate having that communication access," the 27-year-old says. "My whole family knows <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Sign_Language" target="_blank">American Sign Language</a>."<br /><br /><br /><br />Because of that, growing up Deaf wasn't an issue. He credits his mom Donna for helping him integrate into the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_%28person%29" target="_blank">hearing</a> world.<br /><br /><br /><br />"My mom did a great job because ever since I was born she would put me into any type of sporting activity with hearing teams," he says. "My mom would often send me out to play with the neighbors, so I felt like I had the best of both worlds."<br /><br /><br /><br />DiMarco went on to graduate with a degree in mathematics from <a href="http://www.gallaudet.edu/" target="_blank">Gallaudet University</a>, a private university for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Washington, D.C.<br /><br /><br /><br />"In middle school, I had the best math teacher I've ever had, and he was Deaf...and I felt inspired by him," he recalls. "I knew from then on that I wanted to be a math teacher."<br /><br /><br /><br />But his life took a different turn when Hollywood came calling.<br /><br /><br /><br />The producers of the TV drama ‘<i><a href="http://abcfamily.go.com/shows/switched-at-birth" target="_blank">Switched at Birth</a></i>’ approached him on social media to play a Deaf character on the show.<br /><br /><br /><br />Then "<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America%27s_Next_Top_Model" target="_blank">America's Next Top Model</a>" producers invited him to audition for season 22, after discovering him on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/nyledimarco/?hl=en" target="_blank">Instagram</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />But being on the modeling reality show wasn't easy.<br /><br /><br /><br />"I had to live with the models in one big house for two months, 24 hours a day. Only a few of them actually learned how to sign ... I couldn't really communicate with anybody and I felt isolated," he remembers. "I just remained optimistic and I was like, 'I'm gonna win this show.'"<br /><br />And he did.<br /><br /><br /><br />"I'm very visual and through those visual cues, I was able to absorb it really fast," he says.<br /><br />The win led DiMarco to a modeling contract.<br /><br /><br /><br />"All within one year, my life just completely flipped for the better."<br /><br /><br /><br />Now he wants to put his celebrity to good use. He recently founded the <a href="https://nyledimarcofoundation.com/" target="_blank">Nyle DiMarco Foundation</a> to help people in the Deaf community gain access to American Sign Language.<br /><br /><br /><br />"There's 70 million Deaf people in this world and only 2% of them have access to education in sign language," he says. "We're talking about millions of Deaf kids without language, without education."<br /><br />DiMarco wants to change that.<br /><br /><br /><br />"What people don't realize is we have our own beautiful culture. Firing of Deaf Employee Costs Firm $240K

<i><b>Deaf News: Deaf ex-employee’s court case puts bosses on notice for behaving badly in Mississauga, Canada.</b></i><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="http://deafyouvideo.blogspot.com/2016/07/firing-of-deaf-employee-costs-firm-240k.html" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Vicky Strudwick"><img height="260" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBDLNBwNZExr_cgJNTqD50iiySZTMDfAYjOnKqUhDOQBtbtc-YdP-hEUblAah_8GANq3_M5M_IY7XZ9_lVaPoQ5UYIF3pcq9Td24c230Ko_6CQpa8qERQ0623CRRZ8cq9jvA_9Lq5_VRUK/s1600/vicky-strudwick.jpg" width="250" /></a>TORONTO, ON -- The Canadian Press: A long-time employee tormented by her employer and unceremoniously dumped after she went <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a> had her damages award more than doubled to $246,000 by Ontario’s top court on Thursday.<br /><br /><br /><br />In its decision, the Appeal Court ruled the egregious nature of the company’s “heartless” misconduct warranted significantly higher damages for Vicky Strudwick.<br /><br /><br /><br />“In the lead-up to Ms. Strudwick’s termination, she was belittled, isolated, humiliated and made to suffer the effects of her disability to the greatest extent possible,” the Appeal Court said.<br /><br /><br /><br />“This conduct was deliberate, malicious and designed to force Ms. Strudwick to quit a job she had held for almost 16 years.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Court documents show that Strudwick worked for <a href="https://www.acceintl.com/" target="_blank">Applied Consumer and Clinical Evaluations</a>, a family-run business based in Mississauga, Ont., that recruits people to participate in focus groups. She began by doing data entry, but later instructed recruiting staff, earning $12.85 an hour.<br /><br /><br /><br />In October 2010, she went completely Deaf - possibly because of a virus.<br /><br /><br /><br />Court records show that Andrew Hoffman, the general manager, and a supervisor, Liz Camilleri, then began a concerted campaign of abuse against Strudwick aimed at forcing her to quit.<br /><br /><br /><br />They not only denied her any accommodation for her disability, but actually took steps to make her life even more difficult, the court said.<br /><br /><br /><br />In May 2011, Hoffman fired her, allegedly for pulling a “stunt” at a company event, prompting Strudwick, then 56, to sue for wrongful dismissal and abuse.<br /><br /><br /><br />Applied Consumer never delivered a statement of defence and was noted in default.<br /><br /><br /><br />In August last year, <a href="http://www.scc-csc.ca/case-dossier/info/counsel-procureurs-eng.aspx?cas=36122" target="_blank">Superior Court Justice Grant Dow awarded her a total of $113,782 and $40,000 in legal costs</a>. Strudwick appealed the damages award as too low, while Applied Consumer - which has about 80 employees - argued the legal costs award was too high.<br /><br /><br /><br />The Appeal Court affirmed the costs award, but found Strudwick deserved much more by way of damages given the “cruel” treatment to which her bosses had subjected her.<br /><br /><br /><br />Examples included giving her instructions while preventing her from lip reading, then calling her stupid. They refused to let her turn her desk around so that she could see people as they approached.<br /><br /><br /><br />“In the immediate lead-up to her dismissal, Ms. Strudwick was confronted in front of an estimated 13 other employees, yelled at and called a ‘goddamned fool’,” the Appeal Court stated.<br /><br /><br /><br />Hoffman, who would later himself be fired, gave her a termination letter and a cheque for three months’ pay. When she refused to sign a release, he took the cheque back and had her marched out of the building in front of her co-workers.<br /><br /><br /><br />Applied Consumer, which claims to foster an environment of “empowerment, engagement, fairness and responsibility,” then claimed she had been fired for insubordination and wilful misconduct - a tactic that delayed her access to employment insurance.<br /><br /><br /><br />On appeal, Strudwick argued for more than $1 million, but the court said its hands were tied by her initial statement of claim, which sought $240,000 plus an amount for loss of benefits.<br /><br /><br /><br />The Appeal Court said she deserved her full claim for damages in light of the “malicious and heartless” treatment meted out to her. The First African Deaf University In Ghana

The University will be opened to all <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a> students in Africa.<br /><br /><br /><br />J. F. Labes, who communicates in the sign language, told <a href="http://starrfmonline.com/1.9153718" target="_blank">Starrfmonline.com</a> he bought into the idea after officials of <a href="https://www.fondation-sncf.org/en/" target="_blank">Mieux Vivre Foundation</a> mooted it to him since he had helped establish schools for the Deaf in France – his home country – and in Morocco.<br /><br /><br /><br />He was full of praise for the “exceptional” Vice Chancellor of Valley View University Prof. Robert Osei-Bonsu, who immediately offered a 50-acre space to construct the University for the Deaf. He stressed that the university is going to be autonomous, despite being on the campus of Valley View University.<br /><br /><br /><br />“I’m so impressed that we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU),” J. F. Labes, who is also the president of Unisda said. “We chose Ghana because it is a stable country and peaceful since it is the first in sub-Saharan Africa to attain independence.”<br /><br /><br /><br />He announced that Ghana will become the second in the world to host such facility after America’s <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallaudet_University" target="_blank">Gallaudet University</a> in Washington.<br /><br /><br /><br />A sponsors’ gathering is expected to be held in September in Ghana to appeal for funds for the ground-breaking initiative. Stakeholders including MPs, officials in the education sector and office of the president are scheduled to grace the occasion.<br /><br /><br /><br />“We want to make sure that everyone including the Deaf will have equal access to education. Persons with hearing impairments are more in Africa and in Ghana alone they make up 7% of the population. There is the need for education for those people hence our resolve to come up with the University,” he noted.<br /><br /><br /><br />He noted that all stakeholders including the schools of the Deaf in Ghana, national association of the Deaf have all been involved in the project.<br /><br /><br /><br />Accompanying J.
