He types for a bit and then makes eye contact with the viewer.<br /><br /><br /><br />LINSAY: Reading newspapers is one of the pastimes that <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a> people loved to do. The first official publication from the Deaf community was the American Annals for the Deaf that was widely circulated. Deaf people could follow what was happening in Deaf communities across the nation. Eventually, different schools for the Deaf would start their own paper; these papers shared opinions, discussions and stories. That prompted many Deaf people living in different areas to develop a sense of mutual cooperation which led up to the establishment of the National Association of the Deaf. These papers included entertaining stories, articles that started discussions on the issues that affected the schools of thought of the day, poems, and general news. A Deaf person in one place probably would read about the person they were familiar with in other area of America and so forth. Nyle DiMarco Wants To Empower Others Who Are Deaf

"If I failed in the first week that means millions of people would view <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a> people as people that can't dance."<br /><br /><br /><br />But the Deaf model and actor decided to take on the challenge.<br /><br /><br /><br />During a rehearsal, professional dance partner <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peta_Murgatroyd" target="_blank">Peta Murgatroyd</a> cranked the music up so DiMarco could feel the vibrations.<br /><br /><br /><br />"When we danced, it really just threw me off," he says. "I told Peta I've always been Deaf. I'm not used to sound, so I think it's better if we dance without the sound. And after that we did better."<br /><br /><br /><br />Not only did they do better, they won the competition on May 24.<br /><br /><br /><br />"We ended on a good note," he says with a smile.<br /><br /><br /><br />DiMarco was born in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queens" target="_blank">Queens, New York</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />"We have over 25 Deaf individuals in my family," he explains. "It is genetic, but there's only 10% of Deaf people that actually come from Deaf families."<br /><br /><br /><br />His twin brother Nico and older brother Neal are Deaf, as are his parents, grandparents and great-grandparents.<br /><br /><br /><br />"I really consider myself fortunate having that communication access," the 27-year-old says. "My whole family knows <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Sign_Language" target="_blank">American Sign Language</a>."<br /><br /><br /><br />Because of that, growing up Deaf wasn't an issue. He credits his mom Donna for helping him integrate into the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_%28person%29" target="_blank">hearing</a> world.<br /><br /><br /><br />"My mom did a great job because ever since I was born she would put me into any type of sporting activity with hearing teams," he says. "My mom would often send me out to play with the neighbors, so I felt like I had the best of both worlds."<br /><br /><br /><br />DiMarco went on to graduate with a degree in mathematics from <a href="http://www.gallaudet.edu/" target="_blank">Gallaudet University</a>, a private university for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Washington, D.C.<br /><br /><br /><br />"In middle school, I had the best math teacher I've ever had, and he was Deaf...and I felt inspired by him," he recalls. "I knew from then on that I wanted to be a math teacher."<br /><br /><br /><br />But his life took a different turn when Hollywood came calling.<br /><br /><br /><br />The producers of the TV drama ‘<i><a href="http://abcfamily.go.com/shows/switched-at-birth" target="_blank">Switched at Birth</a></i>’ approached him on social media to play a Deaf character on the show.<br /><br /><br /><br />Then "<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America%27s_Next_Top_Model" target="_blank">America's Next Top Model</a>" producers invited him to audition for season 22, after discovering him on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/nyledimarco/?hl=en" target="_blank">Instagram</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />But being on the modeling reality show wasn't easy.<br /><br /><br /><br />"I had to live with the models in one big house for two months, 24 hours a day. Only a few of them actually learned how to sign ... I couldn't really communicate with anybody and I felt isolated," he remembers. "I just remained optimistic and I was like, 'I'm gonna win this show.'"<br /><br />And he did.<br /><br /><br /><br />"I'm very visual and through those visual cues, I was able to absorb it really fast," he says.<br /><br />The win led DiMarco to a modeling contract.<br /><br /><br /><br />"All within one year, my life just completely flipped for the better."<br /><br /><br /><br />Now he wants to put his celebrity to good use. He recently founded the <a href="https://nyledimarcofoundation.com/" target="_blank">Nyle DiMarco Foundation</a> to help people in the Deaf community gain access to American Sign Language.<br /><br /><br /><br />"There's 70 million Deaf people in this world and only 2% of them have access to education in sign language," he says. "We're talking about millions of Deaf kids without language, without education."<br /><br />DiMarco wants to change that.<br /><br /><br /><br />"What people don't realize is we have our own beautiful culture. The First African Deaf University In Ghana

Labes, who communicates in the sign language, told <a href="http://starrfmonline.com/1.9153718" target="_blank">Starrfmonline.com</a> he bought into the idea after officials of <a href="https://www.fondation-sncf.org/en/" target="_blank">Mieux Vivre Foundation</a> mooted it to him since he had helped establish schools for the Deaf in France – his home country – and in Morocco.<br /><br /><br /><br />He was full of praise for the “exceptional” Vice Chancellor of Valley View University Prof. Robert Osei-Bonsu, who immediately offered a 50-acre space to construct the University for the Deaf. He stressed that the university is going to be autonomous, despite being on the campus of Valley View University.<br /><br /><br /><br />“I’m so impressed that we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU),” J. F. Labes, who is also the president of Unisda said. “We chose Ghana because it is a stable country and peaceful since it is the first in sub-Saharan Africa to attain independence.”<br /><br /><br /><br />He announced that Ghana will become the second in the world to host such facility after America’s <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallaudet_University" target="_blank">Gallaudet University</a> in Washington.<br /><br /><br /><br />A sponsors’ gathering is expected to be held in September in Ghana to appeal for funds for the ground-breaking initiative. Stakeholders including MPs, officials in the education sector and office of the president are scheduled to grace the occasion.<br /><br /><br /><br />“We want to make sure that everyone including the Deaf will have equal access to education. Persons with hearing impairments are more in Africa and in Ghana alone they make up 7% of the population. There is the need for education for those people hence our resolve to come up with the University,” he noted.<br /><br /><br /><br />He noted that all stakeholders including the schools of the Deaf in Ghana, national association of the Deaf have all been involved in the project.<br /><br /><br /><br />Accompanying J. We know that AG Bell was a strong supporter of the eugenics movement. He supported language oppression, leading to a legacy of linguicism in Deaf history. Eugenics began and was practiced here in the United States before being adopted in Nazi Germany. Thus, Bell was part of the development of the notion of a “better stock of human beings” which clearly indicated that Deaf people were unacceptable. Bell’s ideology shows repeated pattern of language oppression, systematic destruction of Deaf people’s culture and way of life. Such systematic ways of destroying any culture needs to be stopped right now.<br /><br /><br /><br />The World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) organization has reported that 70 million Deaf and Deaf Blind people around the globe use sign language. Additionally, WFD has worked closely with the United Nations in developing the Convention of Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). The UNCRPD focuses on the rights of Deaf people including recognition of the human right to sign language as a first language. The CRPD, therefore, recognizes and promotes the sign languages of Deaf people worldwide. A related CRPD principle reaffirms the education of Deaf children through sign language followed by reading and writing skills in the language of their home countries. The recent letter from the AG Bell Association mentions sign language as simply one of many “options.” Thus, the AG Bell Association has blatantly denied Deaf children the human right to sign language that has been asserted by WFD/UN CRPD.<br /><br /><br /><br />I’ve noticed among Deaf students here at NTID that they tend to communicate most successfully through sign. These students are diverse: many from international countries and from various states; their educational backgrounds include experiencing mainstream schools and Deaf schools. When they all come together and need to communicate effectively in the moment, they all use sign. Speech doesn’t work well because many of the international students do not lipread English nor use spoken English. When they come together, they all can sign and smoothly collaborate. This experience is evidence that it is signing which allows diverse students to be successful communicators.<br /><br /><br /><br />For many years, AG Bell has reinforced the concept that speech is equated with the ability to learn language which is misleading and erroneous. Focusing on developing literacy is different from speech training. Being able to use speech may be a convenient way to communicate with many people, but it does not lead to literacy--that is, skills such as the ability to think, reason, negotiate, read and write. Research has indicated that in America today there are about 30 million people who use speech fluently, but who cannot read and write. When you give your child language, you need to remember that Deaf children always are bilingual or multilingual. Today in 2016, we have a lot of research that AG Bell’s assumptions have been wrong.<br /><br /><br /><br />In 2008, the President and CEO of AG Bell Association wrote a letter to the Pepsi Company chastising them for having shown a commercial which included Deaf people signing. It was just one short commercial shown on one day out of a whole year’s worth of commercials. Yet, the President and CEO of AG Bell were so upset that they felt they needed to respond. At NTID/RIT, the students, faculty, staff, community members and members of the Orange and Brown Coalition decided that we must confront you about this injustice. We demanded that you rescind your letter to the Pepsi Company and apologize for offending and misrepresenting Deaf people. At the same time, people at NTID/RIT began to question the integrity of having a building named in honor of AG Bell on our campus. Students began to study Bell’s history and notice his pattern of oppressing Deaf people’s language and culture as well as his destructive impact on the individual lives of Deaf people. Because of this history, they felt NTID/RIT should not show honor much less tolerance for people who represent such actions. After much discussion, the name and plaque honoring AG Bell was finally removed from our campus. That was in 2008.<br /><br /><br /><br />Now, in 2016, you have again written a letter publically insulting Deaf people, Deaf culture, and ASL. You seem resistant to learning. They require government: justice and compensation for the families of 3 women cowardly murdered (Jésula Germain, mère de six enfants, Vanessa Prévil and Monique Vincent).<br /><br /><br /><br />Upset, Gérald Oriol Jr., Secretary of State for the Integration of Persons with Disabilities, strongly condemned these crimes "This is unthinkable in our society that such crimes be committed" recalling that one of the three victims was pregnant three months. Gérald Oriol Jr believes that society should say no to violence, no to discrimination.<br /><br /><br /><br />For Dr. Michel A. Pean, coordinator of the SHAA "it is time to question the customs and outdated traditions of certain elements of Haitian culture..."<br /><br /><br /><br />In addition, in a statement, the Board of Directors of the Arche Haiti, points out that "these odious crimes, remind that committed on our revered dumb musician Ti-Pierre in the 1990s. The phones were up, video rolling and pictures snapping to capture one mermaid in particular, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/BrennaDeBartolo/" target="_blank">Brenna DeBartolo</a>. <br /><br /><br /><br />DeBartolo is <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a>, but that didn't stop her from entering the bar's "<a href="http://divebarsacramento.com/" target="_blank">Mermaid for a Night</a>" contest. She first went to the Dive Bar for a sales retreat, and fell in love with the atmosphere, and the mermaids.<br /><br /><br /><br />"It's a different world," she said. "I can imagine myself offering my energy and the magic of the Deaf community in the same place." <br /><br /><br /><br />With support from the Deaf community, and Brenna's drive, she beat out 10 other candidates. It's something that stood out to Dive Bar's head mermaid, Rachel Smith.<br /><br /><br /><br />"The amount of time she actually spent in the bar actually talking to people and gaining their support and gaining their votes," Smith said. "She's really personable, she's really friendly, and she worked really, really hard to get in the tank."<br /><br /><br /><br />DeBartolo trained for nearly a month, getting some practice in with the other mermaids.<br /><br /><br /><br />She says she didn't have any butterflies, and that it helps that she can't see very well when inside the tank.<br /><br /><br /><br />Her two performances were a success and as she took pictures with fans, she said the experience was overwhelming.<br /><br /><br /><br />"I understand sometimes how celebrities might feel out there, that you're smiling so much that your face gets sore," DeBartolo said. While the broader culture has become accustomed to certain changes the law has engendered, particularly wheelchair access, the rights of the Deaf have frequently been misunderstood or simply disregarded.<br /><br /><br /><br />Recently, however, a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaf_rights_movement" target="_blank">Deaf rights</a> movement has begun to gain ground, particularly in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York" target="_blank">New York</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />One sign of this momentum has been a flurry of lawsuits. Last year, the city’s Department of Homeless Services <a href="http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-deaf-homeless-people-gain-interpreters-shelters-article-1.2404490">settled a case</a> that charged its shelters with failing to provide <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Sign_Language" target="_blank">American Sign Language</a> interpreters for Deaf residents, and a suit filed last summer in Westchester County claimed that two hospitals refused a Deaf couple’s requests for interpreters after the husband had a heart attack.<br /><br /><br /><br />Another case involved <a href="https://www.facebook.com/diana.williams.5220" target="_blank">Diana Williams</a>, a Deaf woman from Staten Island who was arrested in 2011 and was denied a sign-language interpreter, as the federal law dictates. In October, the <a href="http://deafyouvideo.blogspot.com/2015/10/deaf-woman-sues-nypd-for-wrongly.html">Police Department settled her lawsuit for $750,000</a>. Her lawyers, from the Eisenberg & Baum Law Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, said it was one of the biggest payouts of its kind.<br /><br /><br /><br />“What’s disturbing about all these lawsuits is that the A.D.A. has been in effect for several decades,” Eric Baum, one of the firm’s founders, recently said. Mr. Baum said that his firm had litigated about 100 Deaf <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrimination" target="_blank">discrimination</a> cases, roughly half in the New York metropolitan area, many dealing with a failure to provide interpreters. <i><b>Deaf News: Deaf lesbian couple who were attacked with a bat: 'We're sacred to walk the streets' in California.</b></i><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="http://deafyouvideo.blogspot.com/2016/03/deaf-lesbian-couple-recovering-being.html" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Deaf Lesbian Couple Deanna Burkhartand and Cathren Huges"><img height="195" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_OTAEM3_c0NR4pxdQPiWYqnklnV260QCgEiHeGzJUuV5JQTHx3qH5czma0EFRjN_5NVu1y6XPNEnQihwoh0uVoxBSmYkcQyPBxCtrXfHsb-XRWArCDP8uyuTqWiH_5nb4BNNZoLcMIlve/s1600/deaf-lesbian-couple-deanna-cathren.jpg" /></a>DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA. -- San Diego Gay & Lesbian News: The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a> lesbian couple who were beaten with a baseball bat in Desert Hot Springs on March 22, have come forward to <a href="http://sdgln.com/news/2016/03/26/deaf-lesbian-couple-who-were-attacked-bat-were-sacred-walk-streets" target="_blank">SDGLN</a> to voice concerns about their safety and to thank the community for their support.<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="http://www.deafvideo.tv/vlogger/Bulldog" target="_blank">Deanna (Dee)</a>, 37, and <a href="http://www.deafvideo.tv/vlogger/BulldogWife" target="_blank">Cathren (Cat)</a>, 30, are recovering from injuries they received on Tuesday when suspect Shaunda Lane allegedly became upset because she didn’t understand the women’s <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sign_language" target="_blank">sign language</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />Dee and Cat used hand signing to ask Lane to leave their property, but were attacked by Lane with a baseball bat according to a police report.<br /><br /><br /><br />Lane is currently behind bars facing <a href="http://m.kesq.com/news/deaf-women-recovering-after-being-brutally-attacked/38644034" target="_blank">attempted murder charges</a>. Local police say they are not investigating the case as a hate crime.<br /><br /><br /><br />Since the attack the women have been trying to get their lives back in order and the community has rallied together to help them. A <a href="http://gofundme.com/bqvsf7v9" target="_blank">Go Fund Me</a> account has been set up to help the couple recover financially.<br /><br /><br /><br />“I really would like to thank the supporters who are my family and Deaf friends, even Deaf teachers, even hearing friends, also hearing families…who already knew who we are, for rest of our lives,” said Dee in the letter to SDGLN.<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="http://deafyouvideo.blogspot.com/2016/03/deaf-lesbian-couple-recovering-being.html" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Deaf Lesbian Couple Deanna Burkhartand and Cathren Huges"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1yKhYdyWw2JRDIdS86vwaK3mmUeLoIRD_d4NGi3nFb3TvmJHhI-4SiduS_T8X07X1CL09Si68MSYwFwsYFypbuL8Yp5xFVfo7WYO_aYHpt5_QCZ1F1OQRB02D8UuSdJEAGki6_tN95gEZ/s1600/deaf-lesbian-couple-deanna-cathren-assaulted.jpg" /></a>Both Dee and Cat suffered severe injuries; Dee a broken hand and concussion.<br /><br /><br /><br />A Good Samaritan who only wishes to be identified as Team Mom has stepped in to help the couple as they recover from shock.<br /><br /><br /><br />Dee is grateful to Team Mom and her continued support, “Team Mom (has) been checking on us almost every day to see if we (are) doing ok, and bring everything that we need. We love her so much. We thank…GOD every day for her,” wrote Cat.<br /><br /><br /><br />After the attack, the couple’s apartment was broken into and their cellphones and other items were stolen or vandalized. Dee expressed some of the things that the donations will go toward. She says they are very scared of living in Desert Hot Springs now and they need money to move.<br /><br /><br /><br />Additionally they need help with, “medical bills which my Medi-Care isn't good; have to transfer from Indiana to…California. Transportations; with no car which during night time is not safe to walk and things were missing at home when it was robbed.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Team Mom opened up her apartment to the couple after their attack and Dee is very grateful for her kindness.<br /><br /><br /><br />“Team Mom has made sure that we have food, clothes money etc... we love that there are people like her in the world,” she writes. “Team Mom lives in a small apartment and still took us in for our safety. She does so much to have so little. Thanks Team Mom for accepting us for who we are. I'm honored to have my Team Mom. Many thanks.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Team Mom is asking for help within the Deaf and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT" target="_blank">LGBT</a> communities to aid these women in getting their lives back in order.<br /><br /><br /><br />“My city has two Deaf females that were <a href="http://www.ksla.com/story/31561080/deaf-women-recovering-after-brutal-attack" target="_blank">beaten within inches of their life with a baseball bat and robbed</a>,” Team Mom writes to SDGLN. “They don't have anything now! Can you help make them feel beautiful again? Contact the community and a few others you may know. To help support the deaf victims to get back on their feet.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Dee says they are still anxious about their assailant, and worry about her getting released from jail.<br /><br /><br /><br />"We are still not feeling safe completely because we heard Shaunda (Lane) is trying to act like she is not guilty for attempted murder," she writes. James McPike said. "This grant was intended to try to remove those barriers for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community."<br /><br /><br /><br />Each of the city's five police districts is stocked with an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPad" target="_blank">iPad</a> equipped with the <a href="https://www.zvrs.com/" target="_blank">ZVRS</a> video <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language_interpretation#Sign_language" target="_blank">interpreter</a> application. The application gives officers dealing with a Deaf crime victim, suspect or witness access to an interpreter within seconds.<br /><br /><br /><br />The technology was purchased using a portion of a $350,000 grant from the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Department_of_Justice" target="_blank">U.S. Department of Justice's Office</a> on <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violence_against_women" target="_blank">Violence Against Women</a> that was awarded to the department in 2011, Cleveland police Sgt. Jennifer Ciaccia said.<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="http://www.chsc.org/" target="_blank">The Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center</a> and the <a href="https://www.dvcac.org/" target="_blank">Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center</a> helped train the police force.<br /><br /><br /><br />Deaf women in the U.S. experience domestic and sexual violence at rates twice those of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_%28person%29" target="_blank">hearing</a> women, according to <a href="http://www.vera.org/about-us" target="_blank">the Vera Institute of Justice</a>, a nonprofit organization that advocates for fairness in the justice system. Yet they often encounter barriers when seeking help, from a phone-based 911 system to having their credibility as witnesses in court questioned.<br /><br /><br /><br />The police department purchased the equipment after getting feedback from the Deaf community, said Maria O'Neil Ruddock, coordinator of training and outreach services for the Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center.<br /><br /><br /><br />"The reason it's here is because the Deaf community has told us, 'We want access to the police, we want to be able to communicate, but it's difficult,'" O'Neil Ruddock said.<br /><br /><br /><br />Cleveland is only one of two large police departments in the country using this technology, she added.<br /><br /><br /><br />The department is also updating its general police orders to include a policy about communicating with the Deaf, McPike said. A draft of that policy is still in the approval stage.<br /><br /><br /><br />Ciaccia said the interpreting technology is not related to <a href="http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2015/05/cleveland_consent_decree_provi.html" target="_blank">a binding agreement with the Justice Department</a> that requires the Cleveland police to improve the way they interact with citizens. The addition of the technology is the latest in a string of efforts by the department to expand training.<br /><br /><br /><br />Mayor Frank Jackson announced in December that officers received <a href="http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2015/12/cleveland_police_accelerated_f.html" target="_blank">first aid training and emergency medical kits</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />The Cleveland Police Academy class that graduated in October was the first to receive 40 hours of <a href="http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2015/10/newest_graduates_of_cleveland.html" target="_blank">crisis intervention training</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2016/03/cleveland_police_department_ge.html" target="_blank">SOURCE</a>
