He said that they took him to a restaurant and ordered food which cost him a few hundred dollars. The cheque the couple issued however, eventually bounced.<br /><br /><br /><br />Several others who commented on Dave’s comment suggested that the woman and her husband would do anything to score a free meal.<br /><br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" src="http://www.liveleak.com/ll_embed?f=86200dfb10ad" width="500"></iframe></div><br /><br /><a href="https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=1020917287945934&id=116960455008293&substory_index=0" target="_blank">Another Facebook user who identified himself as a property agent</a> described the couple as ‘phony buyers”. He asked fellow agents to beware of the couple saying they bought from “PropNex and Huttons agents ranging from 2-4 units as bulk purchases,” but that all their cheques from various banks bounced.<br /><br /><br /><br />He identified the couple as Alice and Chong Meng Chew. This Facebook user also released their personal details like address and phone numbers. He advised other agents to demand only Cashier’s Order from the couple if they ever come forward to buy any realty in the future.<br /><br /><br /><br />“I apologise for the behaviour but I was having a bad cold that day, and I didn’t know that the cleaner was deaf and mute,” Fong told Chinese newspaper Shin Min today (5 Jun). In the video shared by Euphemia Lee of the incident however, Fong was heard implying, “he is old, he is Deaf and he is dumb, so? I must give in to him? I don’t understand!”<br /><br /><br /><br />Fong told the Chinese newspaper earlier today that she had taken half-day off from work on that day as she was feeling unwell. She had also noticed “something dirty” in the food she had finished eating, and wanted to take a picture of it to complain. <i><b>Deaf News: Deaf ex-employee’s court case puts bosses on notice for behaving badly in Mississauga, Canada.</b></i><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="http://deafyouvideo.blogspot.com/2016/07/firing-of-deaf-employee-costs-firm-240k.html" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Vicky Strudwick"><img height="260" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBDLNBwNZExr_cgJNTqD50iiySZTMDfAYjOnKqUhDOQBtbtc-YdP-hEUblAah_8GANq3_M5M_IY7XZ9_lVaPoQ5UYIF3pcq9Td24c230Ko_6CQpa8qERQ0623CRRZ8cq9jvA_9Lq5_VRUK/s1600/vicky-strudwick.jpg" width="250" /></a>TORONTO, ON -- The Canadian Press: A long-time employee tormented by her employer and unceremoniously dumped after she went <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a> had her damages award more than doubled to $246,000 by Ontario’s top court on Thursday.<br /><br /><br /><br />In its decision, the Appeal Court ruled the egregious nature of the company’s “heartless” misconduct warranted significantly higher damages for Vicky Strudwick.<br /><br /><br /><br />“In the lead-up to Ms. Strudwick’s termination, she was belittled, isolated, humiliated and made to suffer the effects of her disability to the greatest extent possible,” the Appeal Court said.<br /><br /><br /><br />“This conduct was deliberate, malicious and designed to force Ms. Strudwick to quit a job she had held for almost 16 years.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Court documents show that Strudwick worked for <a href="https://www.acceintl.com/" target="_blank">Applied Consumer and Clinical Evaluations</a>, a family-run business based in Mississauga, Ont., that recruits people to participate in focus groups. She began by doing data entry, but later instructed recruiting staff, earning $12.85 an hour.<br /><br /><br /><br />In October 2010, she went completely Deaf - possibly because of a virus.<br /><br /><br /><br />Court records show that Andrew Hoffman, the general manager, and a supervisor, Liz Camilleri, then began a concerted campaign of abuse against Strudwick aimed at forcing her to quit.<br /><br /><br /><br />They not only denied her any accommodation for her disability, but actually took steps to make her life even more difficult, the court said.<br /><br /><br /><br />In May 2011, Hoffman fired her, allegedly for pulling a “stunt” at a company event, prompting Strudwick, then 56, to sue for wrongful dismissal and abuse.<br /><br /><br /><br />Applied Consumer never delivered a statement of defence and was noted in default.<br /><br /><br /><br />In August last year, <a href="http://www.scc-csc.ca/case-dossier/info/counsel-procureurs-eng.aspx?cas=36122" target="_blank">Superior Court Justice Grant Dow awarded her a total of $113,782 and $40,000 in legal costs</a>. Strudwick appealed the damages award as too low, while Applied Consumer - which has about 80 employees - argued the legal costs award was too high.<br /><br /><br /><br />The Appeal Court affirmed the costs award, but found Strudwick deserved much more by way of damages given the “cruel” treatment to which her bosses had subjected her.<br /><br /><br /><br />Examples included giving her instructions while preventing her from lip reading, then calling her stupid. They refused to let her turn her desk around so that she could see people as they approached.<br /><br /><br /><br />“In the immediate lead-up to her dismissal, Ms. Strudwick was confronted in front of an estimated 13 other employees, yelled at and called a ‘goddamned fool’,” the Appeal Court stated.<br /><br /><br /><br />Hoffman, who would later himself be fired, gave her a termination letter and a cheque for three months’ pay. When she refused to sign a release, he took the cheque back and had her marched out of the building in front of her co-workers.<br /><br /><br /><br />Applied Consumer, which claims to foster an environment of “empowerment, engagement, fairness and responsibility,” then claimed she had been fired for insubordination and wilful misconduct - a tactic that delayed her access to employment insurance.<br /><br /><br /><br />On appeal, Strudwick argued for more than $1 million, but the court said its hands were tied by her initial statement of claim, which sought $240,000 plus an amount for loss of benefits.<br /><br /><br /><br />The Appeal Court said she deserved her full claim for damages in light of the “malicious and heartless” treatment meted out to her. His frustration in trying to place an order is evident in the use of his car horn, something, he himself, doesn't hear. It struck a nerve with one of the employees.<br /><br /><br /><br />Video captured an employee’s response: "You can leave or I'm going to call police. Do you get that one?"<br /><br /><br /><br />Ramos has been in Columbus for less than a year and has ordered at the McDonald’s before. He’s <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a>. Chicken pox took his <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing" target="_blank">hearing</a> when he was a little boy. He doesn't <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lip_reading" target="_blank">read lips</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />After exchanging texts and emails, <a href="http://www.wowt.com/home/headlines/Deaf-customer-upset-with-McDonalds-over-treatment-368115431.html" target="_blank">WOWT 6 News</a> met with Ramos outside the restaurant. He explained he usually types the information on his phone and then shows the order to the employee.<br /><br /><br /><br />Because of his <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disability" target="_blank">disability</a>, he felt the workers were ignoring him by leaving the window.<br /><br /><br /><br />After this exchange, Ramos said the employees need a serious lesson in dealing with hearing- impaired customers.<br /><br /><br /><br />The owners of this McDonald's told WOWT it was a matter of misunderstanding and miscommunication. They said that earlier in the video when workers left the window on New Year's Day, they weren't <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrimination" target="_blank">discriminating</a> against Jonathan, but getting a pen and paper to get the order.<br /><br /><br /><br />From Jonathan Ramos' cellphone video, workers wrote this note: "You need to leave or we will call the police."<br /><br /><br /><br />Employees did call police, saying that he refused to move forward in the drive through.<br /><br /><br /><br />The owners tell WOWT 6 News that his minute-long video is only part of the story; that their own driver-though security cameras paint a different picture of <a href="http://deafyouvideo.blogspot.com/2016/01/drive-thru-mcdonalds-discrimination.html">Ramos disrupting a busy drive-through by honking his horn for nine minutes</a> before turning his own video recorder on. Ramos disputes that account.<br /><br /><br /><br />When asked if he thought it was all a misunderstanding, Ramos shrugged his shoulders. Ramos went on to explain that there’s no excuse for how he was treated. He plans to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawsuit" target="_blank">sue</a> for discrimination.<br /><br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/hi3zt3z1JZ4" width="500"></iframe></div><i>I, Jonathan, am he declared sue to McDonald's Columbus, Nebraska.</i><br /><br /><br /><br />For the restaurant's part, owners admit tempers flared but that neither side communicated well. They said Deaf customers usually bypass the speaker and go straight to the window to hand them a piece of paper with the order.<br /><br /><br /><br />After the incident, the McDonald’s now keeps a pad and pen near the drive-through window in order to better communicate with the Deaf community.<br /><br /><br /><br />Ramos hopes he's opened some eyes for every worker when it comes to dealing with those with a disability.
