This does not include the number of friends and family including children who travel with us.<br /><br /><br /><br />2. <b>We Would Like to Access Onboard Entertainment Too.</b> Please make your onboard entertainment accessible by providing <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Closed_captioning" target="_blank">captioned</a> material. We know those safety videos have to be captioned but c’mon, we know you can caption the latest blockbuster that you so happily offer to all your passengers. The technology barriers that once existed are practically nonexistent as captioning is already being provided on some airlines. For those airlines providing captioning access, please keep up the great work.<br /><br /><br /><br />3. <b>We Would Appreciate Being Informed When It is Our Time to Board.</b> As there are multiple lines and sections or classes called at different times, it is difficult if not impossible to know when it is our turn as in Priority or Group 1 versus Rows 30-54 or Group 3. Please make use of the the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passenger_information_system" target="_blank">electronic information boards</a> that are widely available to share information as to specific boarding times. Many other people would also benefit from this type of electronic communications.<br /><br /><br /><br />4. <b>We do Prefer If You Communicate with Us Directly.</b> Please not use our children or family members who are <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_%28person%29" target="_blank">hearing</a> to communicate with us. There is nothing worse than using a child to communicate the often complicated travel schedules that occur with airline snafus and delays. We know this may take extra time and the ticket lines can get long but hey, we are passengers too. Lets talk about ways to make this easier!<br /><br /><br /><br />5. <b>Please Tell Us We Actually Have Time to Grab That Extra Coffee.</b> Please post all changes including gate changes and flight delays on your electronic boards and use clearly identifiable signage to indicate changes have been made. There is nothing worse to be sitting at an airport only to find out that the gate has been changed to a different terminal and missing your flight or that you actually had time to grab that cup of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffee" target="_blank">coffee</a>. We love those airlines that already do this!<br /><br /><br /><br />6. <b>We Are Not Trying to Ignore the Flight Attendants.</b> We do want that drink too and to put away our devices as required. There is no need to receive a hard stare because we did not respond quickly enough. For those who have identified themselves as Deaf and Hard of Hearing, please have your staff double check the flight list to let us know how we can best <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communication_%28disambiguation%29" target="_blank">communicate</a> with you during the flight.<br /><br /><br /><br />7. <b>Please Tell Us If We Are Experiencing Flight Issues.</b> Yes, it would be great to get a heads up as to the exciting places we are flying over like the Grand Canyon. Jokes shared over the plane’s <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_address_system" target="_blank">PA system</a> are also great. We realize that this is not always possible but please share essentials such as delays on the embankment or the fact that we may have to have an emergency landing in a different city. Seeing the Trudeaus together with the Obamas was an exciting moment, he added.<br /><br /><br /><br />“It was very cool to see them right there in front of us. We cheered, signed ‘I love you,’ waved the Canadian flags, and hoped to catch their attention. I think they did notice us. I’ve never dreamed to be that very close to the two most important leaders in the same location.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Scott watched the military guard perform a salute to the two leaders and, with the help of an interpreter, laughed at Obama’s jokes about hockey.<br /><br /><br /><br />“We took a lot of pictures everywhere to remember the unforgettable event. After the speeches, we did hope for both leaders to walk by us, shake hands, and take selfies with them, but that didn’t happen. I’m fine with it because I’m more than satisfied to see them up close instead of watching on the TV.”<br /><br /><br /><br />After the Trudeaus’ departure, Scott and his friends left for lunch and a chance to discuss what they had seen.<br /><br /><br /><br />“It was definitely a once-in-a-life opportunity, and that will probably not happen again in my lifetime. Not some radical conservative group, but the <a href="http://ownitendit.org/" target="_blank">Gay & Lesbian Center of Los Angeles</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />In this day and age, when you would think that we have come so far in the struggle to get middle America to embrace the fact that this is not a disease with an orientation, this comes along and is making waves even in <a href="http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1713859/posts" target="_blank">conservative circles</a> and feeding the fodder.<br /><br /><br /><br />Response in the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT" target="_blank">LGBT</a> community has been strong, and according to many of the postings on the discussion board at the <a href="http://imaginatron.com/forum/" target="_blank">Own It. End It.</a> website, not everyone is happy with it.<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HIV" target="_blank">Human Immunodeficiency Virus</a> (HIV) is a Gay Disease? Are you kidding? For those of us living with the shame and fear of being HIV positive, I'm angry. For those who've lived long enough to see the world begin to accept HIV as more then a gay disease, I'm offended. For those who expect more from our gay organizations, I'm disappointed. Most people will only read your flashy tag line and that's what they'll promote. This world is filled with misinformation, due to our short attention spans. Most people get there information from bits and pieces propagated by the evening news or a flashy headline. I expected more from your center. While the details of your ad are most likely accurate, you've done an injustice to your community. End It." I frankly don't think that this distinction makes it OK. Own what? This has generated enough attention in L.A., at this point, that the casual observer know exactly what the billboards are asking gay men to do. Take ownership of a disease they didn't create. How can you ask us as a community to own something that has affected millions globally? And to a much greater degree worldwide the heterosexual populaion? It boggles the mind...<br /><br /><br /><br />Personally, I'm not comfortable with this at all. Gay men have fought this stigma from the very beginning of this disease. To have it come full circle in an shock tactic campaign, even in the interest of public awareness, is not cool. And before anyone says, "Look, it says clearly in the ad that they don't believe that it is a disease with an `orientation'" let me tell you something:<br /><br /><br /><br />I have taken enough marketing classes and seminars to understand that the initial impact of the bolded taglines is whatthe average driver on the streets of L.A. will remember, or the average reader skimming a magazine will read. Now in middle school, he’s spent almost his whole life with the ability to turn off the world’s noise at will. In the morning, he attaches the <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19924015" target="_blank">external magnets</a> of his cochlear implants to each side of his head, where they transmit sound from the <a href="http://www.mathworks.com/help/dsp/examples/cochlear-implant-speech-processor.html?requestedDomain=www.mathworks.com" target="_blank">microphones and speech processors</a> worn over his ears. The electrode arrays in each of his cochleae then stimulate the auditory nerve, and zap, he “hears.”<br /><br /><br /><br />With his implant, he’s become part of a new generation of profoundly <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a> kids who are assimilated into the mainstream <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_%28person%29" target="_blank">hearing</a> world. In 1989, the <a href="http://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/ProductsandMedicalProcedures/ImplantsandProsthetics/CochlearImplants/ucm062882.htm" target="_blank">Food and Drug Administration</a> approved cochlear implants for children aged 2 years or older; in 2000, the agency green-lit implants for kids as young as 12 months. In the wake of those approvals, thousands of parents like me with no connection to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaf_culture" target="_blank">Deaf culture</a> or knowledge of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Sign_Language" target="_blank">American Sign Language</a> have opted to have their children receive implants. (More than 90 percent of congenitally Deaf babies are born to typical-hearing parents.)<br /><br /><br /><br />But our decision also placed our son in between two worlds: He is not a member of Deaf <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sign_language" target="_blank">signing</a> culture, but neither is he fully part of the hearing community. Instead, he lives somewhere in the middle, joining the 48 million Americans who are challenged with some level of hearing loss.<br /><br /><br /><br />“Sometimes my brain accounts for the fact that I don’t hear,” he says. “Like if I stomp my foot with my implants off, then my brain kind of makes a sound for it.” He is coming to recognize himself as a “Hearing/Deaf” person an identity that has shaped his sense of social inclusion in unique ways. When his cochlear implants are off, he says, he experiences the world through a kind of “peaceful darkness.” (At times, the decision to turn it on and off is a strategic one: “It is kind of cool to take them off when someone is being annoying to me.”)<br /><br /><br /><br />According to the FDA, approximately 88,000 people in the U.S. had received cochlear implants as of 2012, including around 38,000 children. The majority of these children attend schools alongside typical-hearing peers, which can be mentally and emotionally taxing as they work to keep up with the sounds around them.<br /><br /><br /><br />Sometimes words just get all mixed up and you just can’t understand the person. “It’s not like you put the implants on and you can hear just like a normal person,” he reminds me. “Sometimes words just get all mixed up and you just can’t understand the person.” Indeed, experts in field of auditory-verbal therapy stress that implant-wearers must be “hearing athletes” in order to thrive in the cacophonous world. Listening is not a passive endeavor, and pressure to keep up can be tiring.<br /><br /><br /><br />In recent years, advancements in hearing technology have made it a little bit easier. My son now has the Naida CI Q90, a model from the California-based implant manufacturer <a data-omni-click="r'article',r'link',r'2',r'472542'" href="http://www.advancedbionics.com/">Advanced Bionics</a>. The implant, recently approved by the FDA, contains software that more effectively minimizes echo, wind, and reverberation sounds. It has Bluetooth capability, meaning that music, movies, and phone calls can be sent wirelessly into his device. It’s also capable of zooming in on a single voice in a noisy environment.<br /><br /><br /><br />The implant has gone a long way towards helping him integrate more seamlessly into the everyday hearing world. At school, for example, the teacher's voice is transmitted to our son’s receivers via an FM system above all other sound, and a portable <a data-omni-click="r'article',r'link',r'3',r'472542'" href="http://www.phonak.com/com/b2c/en/products/wireless-accessories/products/roger-pen/hearing-aid-accessory.html">pen-shaped microphone</a> on his school desk picks up small group conversations.<br /><br /><br /><br />But for a tween, naturally, the biggest concern it is all about fitting in. My son’s hair is now deliberately long enough to cover his hearing devices. If you want a passerby's attention, you shout his name. If a professor needs to explain a math problem, it's not a problem to talk while writing concepts on the board.<br /><br /><br /><br />But people who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing depend on different senses to navigate everything from social interactions to academics. The concept of DeafSpace uses that experience to inform the design of environments.<br /><br /><br /><br />Gallaudet University - a school located in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington,_D.C." target="_blank">Washington, DC</a>, and the world’s only institution of higher education for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is in the process of modifying the historic university’s campus to create a more inclusive environment for the Deaf student body.<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://www.gallaudet.edu/campus-design/contact-us/campus-design-and-planning/bauman-hansel.html" target="_blank">Hansel Bauman</a>, the architect behind DeafSpace, has redesigned parts of Gallaudet's campus around five basic principles: space and proximity, sensory reach, mobility and proximity, light and color, and acoustics. Deaf Schools In Belleville Worried About Future

This is a good turnout and it shows that people are concerned here,” he said, of the meeting held at the Travelodge Hotel on Friday.<br /><br /><br /><br />Ann Carr, a former counsellor at the local schools, warned that inaction will be costly once the school year ends and changes are implemented in the fall.<br /><br /><br /><br />“These children need people qualified to be with them,” Carr said. “When these children go into the regular system they’re just going to have someone who took a regular <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sign_language" target="_blank">sign language</a> course. If I were you guys I would go to the local public board and find out what they’re going to do for your kids before the cuts come.<br /><br /><br /><br />“You are in danger,” Carr said. “These kids have a right.”<br /><br /><br /><br />She urged students and staff to lobby the mayor and other levels of government to back their campaign to protect jobs and specialized student education here.<br /><br /><br /><br />“If you don’t do it now, at the end of June you guys are going to have nothing,” said Carr. “At the end of June they’re going to say goodbye. This is for real, you have to start moving today.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Sarah Colbeck is not only a social worker providing services at both aforementioned schools, but she’s also speaks from the unique perspective of being a mother with four children taught at the Dundas Street West site.<br /><br /><br /><br />“Deaf children get full access to certain services for free,” Colbeck said of the current system, which if changed will force parents to either send students to schools farther away or foot the bill to find services and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Sign_Language" target="_blank">American Sign Language</a> tutors.<br /><br /><br /><br />“Once you close that school it’s going to be a disaster,” Colbeck said. “It’s going to have a big impact on the hearing schools (public schools) as well because they’re not prepared to cater to each student’s needs. During the mid-day meal he sought food from teacher Raghuvir Raghuvir, who then slapped the minor as he was "not a part of the school".<br /><br /><br /><br />"My son has lost his hearing ability in one ear," said Rajat's father Shyamvir Singh, "Rajat is yet to enrol in primary school but he wanted to attend class with his brother and sisters. He was hungry and asked for food, when Raghuvir slapped him hard on the face. The slap caused Rajat's ear to bleed. Later we found out from doctors that he had partially lost his hearing ability."<br /><br /><br /><br />Rubbishing Shyamvir's claims, the accused teacher, Raghuvir, told <a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/agra/Teacher-slaps-toddler-deaf-for-wanting-food-in-bothers-school/articleshow/51029356.cms" target="_blank">TOI</a>: "Shyamvir is not telling the truth. The child was normal till the end of school. The matter was sensationalized after the child reached home."<br /><br /><br /><br />He said, "I did slap Rajat for wandering around the school ground alone, where <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free-ranging_dog#Stray_versus_feral" target="_blank">stray dogs</a> could have attacked and hurt him. This is the second self-portrait in his <a href="http://www.straight.com/news/575436/vancouver-advocate-illuminates-challenges-deaf-people-face-social-media-self-portrait">series</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />Are we programmed to behave robotically in social environments?<br /><br /><br /><br />The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cochlear_implant" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">cochlear implant (or CI)</a> received its approval by the <a href="http://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/ProductsandMedicalProcedures/ImplantsandProsthetics/CochlearImplants/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1990</a> and it has been controversial for over two decades. This machine had a significant impact on <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaf_culture" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Deaf culture</a> due to the perception of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_%28person%29" target="_blank">hearing</a> people trying to force it on the community. The greater the force, the more some Deaf community members want to flip a table. For them, the CI is nothing but a computer inside a human body.<br /><br /><br /><br />In this image, this person is the embodiment of a betrayal of the Deaf world, though Deaf culture remains a part of him.<br /><br /><br /><br />His experience of Deafness is like a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porcupine" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">porcupine</a>: when there are social dangers, a quill pricks him for every awkward encounter.<br /><br /><br /><br />Every day, he is reminded of his interaction with <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audism" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Audisms</a> and ensures that they’re comfortable with him, even though a large percentage of the hearing world will avoid Deaf people due to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communication#Barriers_to_effective_human_communication" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">communication barriers</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />He is often caught “checking out” of a conversation and, like a machine, nodding with a pseudo smile.<br /><br /><br /><br />This bionic human experiences stigma and judgment from both Deaf people and the hearing world because he belongs to neither.<br /><br /><br /><br />Though his Deaf identity is invisible, he has a choice: to hide or to reveal his beautiful self.<br /><br /><br /><br />The <a href="http://deafyouvideo.blogspot.com/2015/11/artificial-intelligence-may-kill-us-all.html">CI may be a machine</a> and technology will never be perfect. The gap between both worlds the Deaf and hearing worlds are great.
