The SignAloud glove <a href="http://www.washington.edu/news/2016/04/12/uw-undergraduate-team-wins-10000-lemelson-mit-student-prize-for-gloves-that-translate-sign-language/" target="_blank">won them a $10,000 Lemelson-MIT Student Prize</a> and international attention. Now they're figuring out how to refine their gadget for social good...and make sure they pass their college exams.<br /><br /><br /><br />The <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/SignAloud" target="_blank">SignAloud</a> glove captures ASL gestures with sensors that measure everything from XYZ coordinates to the way individual fingers flex or bend. That sensor data is sent via Bluetooth to a nearby computer and fed into coding algorithms that categorize the gestures, which are translated into English and then audibly spoken via speaker. [ASL] is more than just words and phrases, and we know that. It has complex grammar structures. What we eventually want to get is for SignAloud to categorize a majority of the language," says Azodi.<br /><br /><br /><br />The two creators, Azodi and fellow sophomore Thomas Pryor, planned and built SignAloud in their dorms and the school’s <a href="http://comotion.uw.edu/makerspace" target="_blank">CoMotion MakerSpace</a>. After a rough first version built on cardboard and string, they put together the current working prototype for about a hundred bucks in parts.<br /><br /><br /><br />"Many of the sign language translation devices already out there are not practical for everyday use. On Wednesday all 50 state capitols will have a rally for Deaf Rights, including <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hartford,_Connecticut" target="_blank">Hartford, Connecticut</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><script height="360px" src="http://player.ooyala.com/iframe.js#pbid=3c1df42a0ea4920b9489cfaaf8aec88&ec=Ntd2hjMzE6FSQ_Cz8jJ_dH0vZE7mBKMf" width="500px"></script></div><br /><br />The activists held signs that said things like "<a href="http://deafyouvideo.blogspot.com/2015/08/deaf-protest-at-white-house-in.html">72% Deaf Americans are unemployed!</a>" and "Deaf kids need <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_schools_for_the_deaf" target="_blank">Deaf schools</a>" and "Give us choice."<br /><br /><br /><br />"And it's time today that we come here and spread the word and teach everybody that we have to improve language improve language for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deafblindness" target="_blank">Deaf-Blind</a> children," said one of the activists at the rally, Patty Wilson, of Newington.<br /><br /><br /><br />One of the biggest issues that the activists were fighting for was access to education in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Sign_Language" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">American Sign Language</a> for Deaf children.<br /><br /><br /><br />While many Deaf children are pushed into <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mainstreaming_%28education%29" target="_blank">mainstream</a> education, there are some options for children who live close enough to enjoy them. In fact, the oldest permanent school for the Deaf in the United States the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_School_for_the_Deaf" target="_blank">American School for the Deaf</a> is right in West Hartford and has been operational since 1817. However, there are only just over 100 schools for the Deaf across the entire country, and only one fully Deaf college (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallaudet_University" target="_blank">Gallaudet University</a>), greatly limiting access.<br /><br /><br /><br />Across the country <a href="http://deafyouvideo.blogspot.com/search/label/Deaf%20Grassroots%20Movement">50 states held their own DGM rallies</a> on Wednesday.<br /><br /><br /><br />Note: Deaf with a capital "D" represents those with hearing loss who utilize sign language and are immersed in the Deaf community. Seventeen-year-old Shayla Tanner, who is <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a>, has faced challenges academically and socially in her home community but has seen tremendous growth in the past three years.<br /><br /><br /><br />She recalls that with few in her community of <a href="https://sites.google.com/a/cowessessfn.com/cowessess-first-nation/" target="_blank">Cowessess First Nation</a> knowing sign language, she fell behind in school and socializing. 'I just felt horrible'<br /><br /><br /><br />"With my work I really felt like I just wanted to give up with it," she said through her interpreter as she signed. "I couldn't communicate with my friends and I felt like I was just having a breakdown.<br /><br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatchewan/growing-up-deaf-in-rural-sask-1.3502627" target="_blank">WATCH CBC With Subtitles</a></span></div><br /><br />"With reading, when I used my voice while at my old school there were four kids and they said they couldn't understand me, and I just felt horrible about that." <br /><br /><br /><br />Tanner says she would try to read lips and write notes to speak to others in her community. <br /><br /><br /><br />"They would talk slow to me, but I still didn't understand. They would talk and I just didn't really get it."<br /><br /><br /><br />Making friends was more difficult than it is now.<br /><br /><br /><br />New beginning at Regina high school. Her mom, Terri Buelman, says she was surprised and overjoyed when she realized the cashier knew and used <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sign_language" target="_blank">sign language</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />Buelman says it was the first time Cynthia was able to order something without feeling uncomfortable with people staring at her.<br /><br /><br /><br />"People just look at her, then they look at us at what we do, so we had to order for her," explains the mom about previous situations.<br /><br /><br /><br />Buelman says they heard about a cashier at Chick-fil-A who knew sign language and had helped other <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf and Hard of Hearing</a> customers with their orders.<br /><br /><br /><br />When they went there, they found Taylor Anez, a high school senior. After hesitating, Cynthia started signing and was surprised when Anez signed back. It was a monumental step of freedom for the young woman.<br /><br /><br /><br />The restaurant manager didn't know Anez could sign, but the young cashier says her relatives are Deaf and she learned so she could communicate with them.<br /><br /><br /><br />Cynthia's story and the video have gone viral. James McPike said. "This grant was intended to try to remove those barriers for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community."<br /><br /><br /><br />Each of the city's five police districts is stocked with an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPad" target="_blank">iPad</a> equipped with the <a href="https://www.zvrs.com/" target="_blank">ZVRS</a> video <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language_interpretation#Sign_language" target="_blank">interpreter</a> application. The application gives officers dealing with a Deaf crime victim, suspect or witness access to an interpreter within seconds.<br /><br /><br /><br />The technology was purchased using a portion of a $350,000 grant from the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Department_of_Justice" target="_blank">U.S. Department of Justice's Office</a> on <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violence_against_women" target="_blank">Violence Against Women</a> that was awarded to the department in 2011, Cleveland police Sgt. Jennifer Ciaccia said.<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="http://www.chsc.org/" target="_blank">The Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center</a> and the <a href="https://www.dvcac.org/" target="_blank">Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center</a> helped train the police force.<br /><br /><br /><br />Deaf women in the U.S. experience domestic and sexual violence at rates twice those of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_%28person%29" target="_blank">hearing</a> women, according to <a href="http://www.vera.org/about-us" target="_blank">the Vera Institute of Justice</a>, a nonprofit organization that advocates for fairness in the justice system. Yet they often encounter barriers when seeking help, from a phone-based 911 system to having their credibility as witnesses in court questioned.<br /><br /><br /><br />The police department purchased the equipment after getting feedback from the Deaf community, said Maria O'Neil Ruddock, coordinator of training and outreach services for the Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center.<br /><br /><br /><br />"The reason it's here is because the Deaf community has told us, 'We want access to the police, we want to be able to communicate, but it's difficult,'" O'Neil Ruddock said.<br /><br /><br /><br />Cleveland is only one of two large police departments in the country using this technology, she added.<br /><br /><br /><br />The department is also updating its general police orders to include a policy about communicating with the Deaf, McPike said. A draft of that policy is still in the approval stage.<br /><br /><br /><br />Ciaccia said the interpreting technology is not related to <a href="http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2015/05/cleveland_consent_decree_provi.html" target="_blank">a binding agreement with the Justice Department</a> that requires the Cleveland police to improve the way they interact with citizens. A set of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cochlear_implant" target="_blank">cochlear implant</a> help him hear, but he relies heavily on <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sign_language" target="_blank">sign language</a> and his <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language_interpretation#Sign_language" target="_blank">interpreter</a>, Tammy Arvin, to communicate.<br /><br /><br /><br />“It’s tough for a kid that has an interpreter,” Arvin said. “Following them around all day, you know, especially if the rest of the class can’t really <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communication" target="_blank">communicate</a>.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Rhemy’s classmate Dexyrae Clarke said, “I wanted to be able to talk to Rhemy, and I wanted to be able to communicate with him.”<br /><br /><br /><br />That’s how the American Sign Language Club was born at the school - with a group of students who wanted to be able to talk to a friend.<br /><br /><br /><br />“I was thrilled that they were interested and that they wanted to learn some sign language,” Arvin said, “and that they were taking some initiative to able to communicate more effectively with one of their classmates.”<br /><br /><br /><br />And this is not like their <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_language" target="_blank">Spanish</a> or <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_language" target="_blank">French</a> classes - students say they are finding there’s a lot that goes into learning this <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language" target="_blank">language</a>, and things aren’t always easy. I’m very excited someone was out there to communicate with her.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Raleigh police blocked all lanes near Rock Quarry Road starting around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. The girl came off the bridge around 4:45 p.m. She was unharmed, police said, and was being evaluated at a local crisis center.<br /><br /><br /><br />Daley says her daughter “got upset and said she was going to hurt herself” after Daley took away her phone. Will Roach is a volunteer instructor and one of the people behind the idea.<br /><br /><br /><br />"We thought about all the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a> students who are isolated, and we thought, 'Why not get them all together, and we could have instructors who are Deaf, so they could have direct communication?'"Roach said.<br /><br /><br /><br />For the participants, communication makes all the difference.<br /><br /><br /><br />"Well, Will was teaching me, and it's really nice to talk to other Deaf people here. That's really the best part," said one of the campers.<br /><br /><br /><br />Officer coordinator and instructor <a href="https://www.facebook.com/deaforegon/posts/658010840909452" target="_blank">Cara Frank</a> knows how important this camp is first0hand. She was born Deaf.<br /><br /><br /><br />"It really has a special place in my heart," she said. "Just having another role model that you can relate to growing up, it's really key. But, strangely enough, she was barely shown by cameras. This is the second time that Matlin signed for the Super Bowl, which is super cool, but it just would've been nice to see more of her. Because she was, you know, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sign_language" target="_blank">signing</a> for <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf and Hard of Hearing</a> people unable to hear the anthem.<br /><br /><br /><br />Matlin appeared in the TV series ‘<i><a href="http://abcfamily.go.com/shows/switched-at-birth" target="_blank">Switched at Birth</a></i>’, but she is also well known for her role in The L Word. <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0559144/" target="_blank">Matlin lost most of her hearing</a> when she was 18 months old, according to IMDb. Matlin participates in a number of volunteer and service activities, but, most notably, she was instrumental in passing legislation that requires all televisions made in the U.S. to be <a href="https://www.looktothestars.org/celebrity/marlee-matlin" target="_blank">equipped with Closed Caption technology for Deaf people</a>, according to Look to the Stars.<br /><br /><br /><br />Matlin also signed the "<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Star-Spangled_Banner" target="_blank">Star Spangled Banner</a>" before Super Bowl XLI in Miami, which was between the Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears, according to <a href="http://hollywoodlife.com/2016/02/07/who-is-marlee-matlin-super-bowl-signing-national-anthem/" target="_blank">Hollywood Life</a>. Often, at major sporting events, the person signing the national anthem will be shown in the corner of the screen, so that those with hearing loss can follow along easily.
