That's why some communities have started allowing people to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Next_Generation_9-1-1" target="_blank">text 911</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />Residents in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakland_County,_Michigan" target="_blank">Oakland County</a> are allowed to text 911 and a message will appear on a screen for a dispatcher to read. A <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a> Rochester Hills man said the texting system saved his house from burning down.<br /><br /><br /><br />The fire started when the man's mother, Mary Powers, tried to clean the oven.<br /><br /><br /><br />"I smelled something and I came out here and the oven was on fire," Powers said.<br /><br /><br /><br />She ran back in the room to tell her son, Scott Powers, to get help.<br /><br /><br /><br />"I told him to call 911," she said.<br /><br /><br /><br />Her son pulled out his cellphone but didn't dial.<br /><br /><br /><br />"That means text because he's Deaf," Powers said.<br /><br /><br /><br />"I'm Deaf, I can't talk on the phone, need fire department immediately," the text read.<br /><br /><br /><br />The text went right through to operators at the <a href="https://www.oakgov.com/sheriff/Pages/about/div_emergency_dispatch.aspx" target="_blank">Oakland County Dispatch Center</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />Oakland County has been equipped with the 911 text messaging for just over a year. They average around 12 emergency text messages a day. Scott Powers owns his house and is thankful the county can accommodate his needs.<br /><br /><br /><br />"I like to be independent without depending on other people," he said. "I used to think, 'What would I do if my house was on fire?' The first thing I used to think was, 'Run to my neighbor.'"<br /><br /><br /><br />He's fortunate to live in an area where he can get emergency help. He hopes other communities will get on board with the technology.<br /><br /><br /><br />"When I'm on the road visiting a friend, sometimes it doesn't work," Powers said. "I'll text 911. I'd get a response back saying it's not available."<br /><br /><br /><br />This was the first time the Rochester Hills Fire Department benefited from the 911 text. The car did not stop and Mr Cohen, who has been Deaf since contracting meningitis as a baby, was left bleeding on the road.<br /><br /><br /><br />But fortunately a pair of Good Samaritans, Jenny Peacock and her husband Matthew from Newport, were driving along Malpas Road at around 7.50pm and stopped to help.<br /><br /><br /><br />Mrs Peacock said they had pulled over to help the man, who was conscious but bleeding with a serious injury to his leg.<br /><br /><br /><br />“We pulled him off the road and put him against the bus stop and waited for the police and an ambulance to arrive,” she said.<br /><br /><br /><br />“It was awful – his skin was ripped open and he was in a lot of pain.<br /><br /><br /><br />“He was Deaf so it was difficult to communicate with him.<br /><br /><br /><br />“He kept signing that he had been hit by a car.”<br /><br /><br /><br />The 35-year-old said neither she nor her husband had seen what had hit him and the victim himself could not remember what had happened.<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="http://www.southwalesargus.co.uk/news/14341034.Hit_and_run_victim_left_lying_in_road_in_Newport_could_lose_leg/" target="_blank">SOURCE</a>

His frustration in trying to place an order is evident in the use of his car horn, something, he himself, doesn't hear. It struck a nerve with one of the employees.<br /><br /><br /><br />Video captured an employee’s response: "You can leave or I'm going to call police. Do you get that one?"<br /><br /><br /><br />Ramos has been in Columbus for less than a year and has ordered at the McDonald’s before. He’s <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a>. Chicken pox took his <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing" target="_blank">hearing</a> when he was a little boy. He doesn't <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lip_reading" target="_blank">read lips</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />After exchanging texts and emails, <a href="http://www.wowt.com/home/headlines/Deaf-customer-upset-with-McDonalds-over-treatment-368115431.html" target="_blank">WOWT 6 News</a> met with Ramos outside the restaurant. He explained he usually types the information on his phone and then shows the order to the employee.<br /><br /><br /><br />Because of his <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disability" target="_blank">disability</a>, he felt the workers were ignoring him by leaving the window.<br /><br /><br /><br />After this exchange, Ramos said the employees need a serious lesson in dealing with hearing- impaired customers.<br /><br /><br /><br />The owners of this McDonald's told WOWT it was a matter of misunderstanding and miscommunication. They said that earlier in the video when workers left the window on New Year's Day, they weren't <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrimination" target="_blank">discriminating</a> against Jonathan, but getting a pen and paper to get the order.<br /><br /><br /><br />From Jonathan Ramos' cellphone video, workers wrote this note: "You need to leave or we will call the police."<br /><br /><br /><br />Employees did call police, saying that he refused to move forward in the drive through.<br /><br /><br /><br />The owners tell WOWT 6 News that his minute-long video is only part of the story; that their own driver-though security cameras paint a different picture of <a href="http://deafyouvideo.blogspot.com/2016/01/drive-thru-mcdonalds-discrimination.html">Ramos disrupting a busy drive-through by honking his horn for nine minutes</a> before turning his own video recorder on. Ramos disputes that account.<br /><br /><br /><br />When asked if he thought it was all a misunderstanding, Ramos shrugged his shoulders. Ramos went on to explain that there’s no excuse for how he was treated. They said Deaf customers usually bypass the speaker and go straight to the window to hand them a piece of paper with the order.<br /><br /><br /><br />After the incident, the McDonald’s now keeps a pad and pen near the drive-through window in order to better communicate with the Deaf community.<br /><br /><br /><br />Ramos hopes he's opened some eyes for every worker when it comes to dealing with those with a disability. He couldn’t hear so he really couldn’t talk he just made noises, strange noises.”<br /><br /><br /><br />The neighbor said Farr did not live at the apartment complex but frequently visited a woman who did.<br /><br /><br /><br />Paul said the man had showed up at her own door a couple of weeks ago with multiple stab wounds to his forehead, but she refused to open the door and instead called 911.<br /><br /><br /><br />“All I saw was like 10 holes in his forehead and blood gushing out, you could barely see his face,” the neighbor said. “But I wouldn’t open my door, because I didn’t know if whoever did that was behind him, and I’m on oxygen, I can’t fight.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Police did not offer any details about that previous incident or say whether it was connected to Farr’s shooting death.<br /><br /><br /><br />Chase told police she stayed with a family friend after the shooting and went to a store the next morning, before returning home to pick up clothes for church.<br /><br /><br /><br />She told police that she called 911 after seeing Farr’s body on the sidewalk outside her door. Florida Man Arrested In Shooting Of Deaf Man

James was found hiding in one of the apartment’s bedrooms, police said.<br /><br /><br /><br />According to police, James shot <a href="http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/breaking-news/os-keith-james-charged-attempted-murder-orlando-20160211-story.html" target="_blank">David Hayden</a>, 25, who is <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf</a> and cannot speak. Hayden was found lying next to his porch on Randall Street, bleeding from the gunshot wound.<br /><br /><br /><br />Investigators said James was riding his bike past Hayden's home when he opened fire, shooting Hayden on the right side of his body. Her grandson came home and said he smelled something burning, so Stewart said she walked toward the kitchen.<br /><br /><br /><br />“I heard something and there was nothing but smoke and stuff. It just engulfed the house,” she said. I couldn’t see nothing and I know he couldn’t hear me,” she said. “We couldn’t save him.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Davis had lived with his aunt since his mother died when he was ten-years-old.<br /><br /><br /><br />“He wasn’t my child, but I raised him as mine and I loved him just as much as my own child that I gave birth to,” said Stewart."I just thank God for all the good things that I remember him by."<br /><br /><br /><br />The other seven people in the home, who were all relatives of Stewart, were able to escape.
