Seeing the Trudeaus together with the Obamas was an exciting moment, he added.<br /><br /><br /><br />“It was very cool to see them right there in front of us. We cheered, signed ‘I love you,’ waved the Canadian flags, and hoped to catch their attention. I think they did notice us. I’ve never dreamed to be that very close to the two most important leaders in the same location.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Scott watched the military guard perform a salute to the two leaders and, with the help of an interpreter, laughed at Obama’s jokes about hockey.<br /><br /><br /><br />“We took a lot of pictures everywhere to remember the unforgettable event. After the speeches, we did hope for both leaders to walk by us, shake hands, and take selfies with them, but that didn’t happen. I’m fine with it because I’m more than satisfied to see them up close instead of watching on the TV.”<br /><br /><br /><br />After the Trudeaus’ departure, Scott and his friends left for lunch and a chance to discuss what they had seen.<br /><br /><br /><br />“It was definitely a once-in-a-life opportunity, and that will probably not happen again in my lifetime. We have many, many successful stories from the students and transfers from mainstream schools,” said Wiesblatt.<br /><br /><br /><br />Many fear community consultations are a sham and the province has already made up its mind about the closings.<br /><br /><br /><br />The total budget for the nine provincial and demonstration schools is $87.6 million. This includes salaries, operating costs and capital expenditures. Her mom, Terri Buelman, says she was surprised and overjoyed when she realized the cashier knew and used <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sign_language" target="_blank">sign language</a>.<br /><br /><br /><br />Buelman says it was the first time Cynthia was able to order something without feeling uncomfortable with people staring at her.<br /><br /><br /><br />"People just look at her, then they look at us at what we do, so we had to order for her," explains the mom about previous situations.<br /><br /><br /><br />Buelman says they heard about a cashier at Chick-fil-A who knew sign language and had helped other <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_loss" target="_blank">Deaf and Hard of Hearing</a> customers with their orders.<br /><br /><br /><br />When they went there, they found Taylor Anez, a high school senior. After hesitating, Cynthia started signing and was surprised when Anez signed back. It was a monumental step of freedom for the young woman.<br /><br /><br /><br />The restaurant manager didn't know Anez could sign, but the young cashier says her relatives are Deaf and she learned so she could communicate with them.<br /><br /><br /><br />Cynthia's story and the video have gone viral. End It.</a> website, not everyone is happy with it.<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HIV" target="_blank">Human Immunodeficiency Virus</a> (HIV) is a Gay Disease? Are you kidding? For those of us living with the shame and fear of being HIV positive, I'm angry. For those who've lived long enough to see the world begin to accept HIV as more then a gay disease, I'm offended. For those who expect more from our gay organizations, I'm disappointed. Most people will only read your flashy tag line and that's what they'll promote. This world is filled with misinformation, due to our short attention spans. Most people get there information from bits and pieces propagated by the evening news or a flashy headline. I expected more from your center. While the details of your ad are most likely accurate, you've done an injustice to your community. End It." I frankly don't think that this distinction makes it OK. Own what? This has generated enough attention in L.A., at this point, that the casual observer know exactly what the billboards are asking gay men to do. Take ownership of a disease they didn't create. How can you ask us as a community to own something that has affected millions globally? And to a much greater degree worldwide the heterosexual populaion? It boggles the mind...<br /><br /><br /><br />Personally, I'm not comfortable with this at all. Gay men have fought this stigma from the very beginning of this disease. To have it come full circle in an shock tactic campaign, even in the interest of public awareness, is not cool. At no time did Ms. Ingram swing the pipe, nor did she ever attempt to strike (the other driver)," the suit states.<br /><br /><br /><br />The cops who arrived on the scene some 45 minutes later spent considerable time speaking with the other driver in the accident, the suit says.<br /><br /><br /><br />They refused to provide Ingram with the means to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communication" target="_blank">communicate</a>, however - though she repeatedly pointed to her ear and shook her head to show her hearing impairment, she says.<br /><br /><br /><br />One of the responding officers asked Ingram for her keys and opened the trunk. He then made several gestures to indicate a pipe, and she retrieved it from the car.<br /><br /><br /><br />As the officers mulled about the scene of the accident, an EMT dispatched to the intersection approached Ingram. She explained that she was Deaf through gestures, and he gave her a piece of paper and pen so that she could speak with him. The officer who had opened her trunk was 10 feet away.<br /><br /><br /><br />"You did not understand me. That's not right. I know she's lying to you. How can I tell you my story? I want my rights. Call interpreter," the note stated.<br /><br /><br /><br />Ingram, 51, tried to show him the note, and while he glanced at it, the cops "expressed visible annoyance" and ignored her.<br /><br /><br /><br />She then saw several officers speaking with each other and they "appeared to be mocking her use of gestures."<br /><br /><br /><br />When the cops moved to arrest her, Ingram had no idea what was happening and became "extremely frightened and utterly bewildered as to the reason for her arrest began crying and repeatedly tried to audibly shout, 'Why?,'" her lawyers maintain.<br /><br /><br /><br />Ingram was ultimately detained for 24 hours and never received an interpreter as required by law, she alleges.<br /><br /><br /><br />She had been charged with four misdemeanors menacing, criminal possession of a weapon, harassment, and resisting arrest but all charges were dropped in July 2013, the suit contends.<br /><br /><br /><br />Ingram is seeking unspecified damages.<br /><br /><br /><br />Asked about the lawsuit, a city Law Department spokesman said that: "The complaint will be reviewed."<br /><br /><br /><br />Ingram’s lawsuit is one of several recent false arrest claims in which Deaf individuals allege they were denied an interpreter.<br /><br /><br /><br />Also Thursday, Susan Herman, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City_Police_Commissioner" target="_blank">NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Collaborative Policing</a>, said the department is hosting an outreach event for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing this March at the former police academy building on E. 20th Street.<br /><br /><br /><br />At the event, they hope to distribute visor plaques for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing so they can better communicate with police officers, she said.<br /><br /><br /><br />These plaques would say that the driver is Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing and the driver's preferred method of communication, as well as various symbols and words, to explain things such as why an officer has stopped the driver.<br /><br /><br /><br />Deaf and hard-of-hearing drivers will also be able to indicate whether they're having a medical emergency, Herman says.<br /><br /><br /><br />The NYPD will soon launch a pilot program in three precincts to increase access to in-person and tablet-based <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Sign_Language" target="_blank">American Sign Language</a> translation. This is a good turnout and it shows that people are concerned here,” he said, of the meeting held at the Travelodge Hotel on Friday.<br /><br /><br /><br />Ann Carr, a former counsellor at the local schools, warned that inaction will be costly once the school year ends and changes are implemented in the fall.<br /><br /><br /><br />“These children need people qualified to be with them,” Carr said. “When these children go into the regular system they’re just going to have someone who took a regular <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sign_language" target="_blank">sign language</a> course. If I were you guys I would go to the local public board and find out what they’re going to do for your kids before the cuts come.<br /><br /><br /><br />“You are in danger,” Carr said. “These kids have a right.”<br /><br /><br /><br />She urged students and staff to lobby the mayor and other levels of government to back their campaign to protect jobs and specialized student education here.<br /><br /><br /><br />“If you don’t do it now, at the end of June you guys are going to have nothing,” said Carr. “At the end of June they’re going to say goodbye. This is for real, you have to start moving today.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Sarah Colbeck is not only a social worker providing services at both aforementioned schools, but she’s also speaks from the unique perspective of being a mother with four children taught at the Dundas Street West site.<br /><br /><br /><br />“Deaf children get full access to certain services for free,” Colbeck said of the current system, which if changed will force parents to either send students to schools farther away or foot the bill to find services and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Sign_Language" target="_blank">American Sign Language</a> tutors.<br /><br /><br /><br />“Once you close that school it’s going to be a disaster,” Colbeck said. “It’s going to have a big impact on the hearing schools (public schools) as well because they’re not prepared to cater to each student’s needs. They said that earlier in the video when workers left the window on New Year's Day, they weren't <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrimination" target="_blank">discriminating</a> against Jonathan, but getting a pen and paper to get the order.<br /><br /><br /><br />From Jonathan Ramos' cellphone video, workers wrote this note: "You need to leave or we will call the police."<br /><br /><br /><br />Employees did call police, saying that he refused to move forward in the drive through.<br /><br /><br /><br />The owners tell WOWT 6 News that his minute-long video is only part of the story; that their own driver-though security cameras paint a different picture of <a href="http://deafyouvideo.blogspot.com/2016/01/drive-thru-mcdonalds-discrimination.html">Ramos disrupting a busy drive-through by honking his horn for nine minutes</a> before turning his own video recorder on. He couldn’t hear so he really couldn’t talk he just made noises, strange noises.”<br /><br /><br /><br />The neighbor said Farr did not live at the apartment complex but frequently visited a woman who did.<br /><br /><br /><br />Paul said the man had showed up at her own door a couple of weeks ago with multiple stab wounds to his forehead, but she refused to open the door and instead called 911.<br /><br /><br /><br />“All I saw was like 10 holes in his forehead and blood gushing out, you could barely see his face,” the neighbor said. “But I wouldn’t open my door, because I didn’t know if whoever did that was behind him, and I’m on oxygen, I can’t fight.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Police did not offer any details about that previous incident or say whether it was connected to Farr’s shooting death.<br /><br /><br /><br />Chase told police she stayed with a family friend after the shooting and went to a store the next morning, before returning home to pick up clothes for church.<br /><br /><br /><br />She told police that she called 911 after seeing Farr’s body on the sidewalk outside her door. We both were there on Sunday nights," said Murdoch. Though Iowa School for the Deaf Renewed their contracts last summer, both teachers received termination notices about four months later.<br /><br /><br /><br />Tighe said, 'I'm really upset. They gave me a contract I don't know why they're firing me.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Tighe taught four special education students and Murdoch had a class of Deaf fifth graders both teachers received similar letters recommending termination.<br /><br /><br /><br />The letters contain a laundry list of at least two dozen reasons why administrators feel the teachers have short comings in the classroom; among the reasons school administrators cited failure to use methods to monitor student learning, failure to demonstrate competence in content and failure to enhance academic performance.<br /><br /><br /><br />"After 25 years they're saying I'm not meeting teaching standards that I was meeting before. It does not make any sense," said Murdoch.<br /><br /><br /><br />Tighe’s mid semester suspension also caused elementary aged special education students to be moved into the high school. That concerns the 7-year-old’s grandmother Kitty Eisenhauer.<br /><br /><br /><br />"She has a new teacher, a new building a new environment and she's in the with high schoolers, I don't really care for that," said Eisenhauer.<br /><br /><br /><br />A regents spokesman tells Six On Your Side the second grade class is in the high school, but they’re in their own room with no high school students except for a well supervised 45 minute period.<br /><br /><br /><br />They are constantly supervised and safety is of primary concern, but Kitty says moving class after removing the teacher affects a special needs seven year old. She said, "Yes I have questions about why. Were there problems because I felt they were both great teachers."<br /><br /><br /><br />The regents who oversee Iowa School for the Deaf won't comment on personnel matters.
